Poll, run and gun or sit and wait?

Wonder what the consensus is, who likes to call and run or set up and wait?

Run and gun most of the time. Sit and wait in certain situations, and especially in the fall

If sitting and waiting doesn't get him then I'll be putting on my track shoes.

RE: Poll, run and gun or sit and wait?

depends on the situation...theres no right or wrong answer. patience can be key...if you know the birds habits and patterns and know they are likely to come back to the area....sometimes they do, sometimes they dont. i know areas that once they fly down and mill around, they are gone till dark and never come back. can sit there all day and your not going to see another turkey. i know others they roost there, fly down and come back later in the morning. gotta know your birds. if you dont, and dont have time to figure them out, id try a little of both.

i personally enjoy runnin n gunnin...sitting there waiting for a turkey just aint fun...i leave that for deer hunting. if i havent heard a bird within an hour im usually bored and runnin....even if that means driving to another location, which if im at home on the small woodlots, i usually am driving. up here at school i hunt a 10k acre gamelands and can run and gun all day and never make it to my truck...

expirience will teach you alot about when to sit and when to leave...

RE: Poll, run and gun or sit and wait?

Several factors make my decision:
1.) the land...how big of an area do I have to work with?
2.) history...what has this bird done last year...what has the area produced over the last few years....it just seems that in some areas the birds will do the same thing that the boss did last year.
3.) time...when do I have to be back at the office?
4.) How late in the season is it? Have the birds been called to a lot?
5.) Is there anyone else nearby that might be hunting, too?

I'm sure there's more that I consider in the moment, but right now those are the biggies.

Run and gun always, I hunt big, public land most of the time, if you sit around someone else will get your bird. I'm a turkey chaser.

RE: Poll, run and gun or sit and wait?

Got to be flexible.

I have killed FAR more birds by understanding where I am hunting and the birds on that piece of property and holding what I got. Running and gunning in my opinion (as most people do it) will bump at least 5 times as many birds as it will bring to bag. Most of those birds hunters don't even know they spooked. Most turkey hunters these days (too many newbies) call way to much.. move way to much... don't know how to hunt the birds anyway.... and have no respect for laws or other hunters in the woods. New duck hunters much the same. Had to call the warden more times this year for people encroaching on my blinds (we have a 500 yard law in VA that is punishable by a class 2).

I'm not opposed to moving, and I usually do move once or twice throughout the morning. But most of you run and bumpers will learn with time and experience that if a bird responds to your calls... he will come in at some point... might be 11am... but he will swing by the area. I cannot tell you how many times when I was a kid that I'd set up and call in a spot until 830 then go move to a different spot.... and I'd find strutt tracks and drag marks later that afternoon where I had been that morning.

Turkey's need three things: Food, Water, and Hens. Food and hens are often found in the same place, because hens usually go to the gobblers. They will hang out in fields and the hens will come to them. In that situation, taking advantage of the fact that when doing a lot of what gobblers do in the spring time, they have to drink 2-3 times a day. Find their water.... game over.

+1.
I'll also add that the sub-species you're hunting and the terrain has a lot to do with you're decision. As an example, In western Oklahoma, if you sit and wait after the birds have left the roost, you may be waiting all day for them to return to the area. These birds travels miles each day, scouting for food and loafing. In heavily wooded areas, such as you find the Eastern sub-species. more patience may bring success.

I like getting on some birds early while you can work them good before they flock up some in my area. Then it seems like the birds shut up till about 10:30. Thats when I pop up the double bull and sit and wait in key feeding and strutting areas. Little harder to do with archery equipment but wow well worth the thrill and excitment.

sit and wait. R+G as a last resort.

RE: Poll, run and gun or sit and wait?

If I have one on the roost I will stay and hunt that bird until I am sure he has left the area.

In area I have scouted I will stay put in struting area, if I hear no bird to work.

If I hear a bird I get as close as possible, but a safe distance, then call.

When hunting areas I didn't have the opportunity to do much scounting i. e. out of state....I travel the ridges listen and call to locate birds.
