RE: Safety tips for new turkey hunter
Its generally a good idea to be able to recognize/acquire your target while hunting any kind of game any ways.... Just another reason I promote shooting within 35 yards...

RE: Safety tips for new turkey hunter
Last spring I was turkey hunting the river bottom. Had my HEN decoy setup, and was working a nice gobbler that was about 200 yds away. My back was to a Giant old cottonwood tree that was at least twice my diameter. Well, I had no idea that someone else was stalking my HEN decoy. All of the sudden there is a huge boom, and my decoy is sitting there spinning on the stake. After I regained my composure, here comes another guy from behind me. He couldnt figure out why the turkey didnt drop, when I started to yell he just shot my decoy. This is in a TOM only season. He was joking that he should tag the decoy, when I told him he owes me $20 for the decoy. Just kinda looked at me, and got out his wallet, gave me a $20 and said he was sorry. That was the second day of the season, and I pretty well gave up hunting turkey in that area. I cant believe people wont identify there targets before they shoot. And Im very glad, I was behind that Cottonwood.

RE: Safety tips for new turkey hunter
Good post.....very broad but a great post that needs addressing for sure...In my mind safety should come to our minds first even before we take to the woods, from proper handling of your firearm in travel to the do's and donts of a proper safe set-up.The NWTF does a very good job of helping turkey hunters of all experience prepare and help be aware of understanding the safety issues in the field and out, in our realm of turkey hunting....With the evolution of turkeyguns, loads, and realism of modern decoys, especially decoys such as B-mobile a strutting tom (in public woods)certainly one can see the distinct possibilty of someone getting hurt.I really like the NWTF's code of conduct and have had that card for some 25 years...
http://www.nwtf.org/tips_adventures/tips.php?id=11238 I would suggest going to there site and inlightening yourself on turkey hunting safety its a great read but better when applied...;):)...Bob...here ya go.... http://www.nwtf.org/hunting_tactics.html Also check out our own safety list right here at Hunting.net...click here.. http://www.huntingnet.com/staticpages/staticpage_detail.aspx?id=211 |

The best thing I can tell you is if you see someone else in the woods just make sure they know your there, and if you get a turkey tie orange tape all over it while your carrying it out.
