I made a hat band. All I did was dry the spurs in borax - I left skin scale on - there is way to take it off and make the bone white - but that was too much trouble.
The leg it self is hollow and you can thread a length of rawhide through it. I then use simple Hobby Lobby Plastic beads to separate spurs.
Worked great - I post a pic soon

I did this one a few years ago. It's a wee bit bigger now but not quite as big as bullshooter's....yet

I prefer the bone look. A coat of nail polish for the gloss look. A jake beard fit better than a long one in the shell. I liked the idea of seeing the top of the shell instead of putting the beard in the usual way. I just cut out a slot and hot glued the beard in.
Once the leg is dried it's pretty easy to cut off the skin. Marrow in the center of the bone pushes right out or if it's dried up just screw through it and it will all crumble out.Soak the bone part only in bleach overnight and coat with clear gloss nail polish.

Okay as promised here are some ideas for you to ponder.
Now all I did was cut the spur from the leg using a modelers band saw - covered them in Borax in a plastic cup and let them dry for a few months. The bone it self is hollow to allow you to thread a good piece of raw hide through it.
This is my NAVHDA dog judgin' hat for NA test!

The next one here are pictures of birds fans I have put on the wall. I do make a wingbone call - add the spurs - and add the beard inside the shell casing I used.
here is my 1st Rio:

and an Eastern upon making the wingbone this bird had a bad day at some point in its life. It lived through a broken wing. Notice the Radius bone - it borke - it healed - this bird became a nice long beard!

Just some idea for you tp ponder - maybe you have a better one or other ideas - let's here 'em!
