what's your camo pattern?

I know there have been posts like this before but...
For turkey hunting I use Mossy Oak Forest Floor, I don't think it goes really well with nature here when spring turkey season is in but I was in a rush when I bought it, I didn't have time to order anything through the mail and none of the stores I went to had a different pattern, so what I have will have to do.

RE: what's your camo pattern?

MO Break-up all the way. Used Realtree for alot of years, probably doesn`t make any difference, movement will give you away before your camo does.

Use realtree hardwoods before things green up, and advantage timber after things green up.

I use RT Hardwoods early in the season, then Advantage Classic as things start to green up.I used to use Kelly Camo green(which was very effective)but it has since faded out and I can't find it anymore.

I use the Sticks n Limbs pattern. I've heard the new pattern Tru-Woods is pretty effective too.

Most of my gear is in Hardwoods, but I will be in the market for a new jacket and will be looking at NatGear's patterns for some green influence once the leaves show up.

Realtree X-tra Brown most of the season...Been a Realtree fan since their very first pattern hit the markets. Then it's Mossy Oak Break-Up after the leaves drop. Wanting to try some NatGear this year.

I have always had good luck with Realtree x-brown. I'm going to get some realtree hardwoods green this season.

RE: what's your camo pattern?

I'm curious, what's this fascination with green in the spring woods? I've had turkeys, all game for that matter, closer to me while wearing ASAT then any camo I've owned and that would be Predator, Realtree, Mossy Oak, military, Treebark etc...the important thing is to break up your outline and none of these do that better than ASAT or Predator regarless of surroundings. Any rebutle?

RE: what's your camo pattern?

I do most of my hunting in the N. Sacramento valley and if I hunt on the east side of the valley you cant beat Realtree's HD Hardwoods pattern because it blends in perfect with the whiteoak and surplus of lava rock from Mt Lassen! On the west side its either Realtree HD Hardwoods Green or Advantage Timber because of the makeup of the foilage.Good camo is that, that matches or blends in with the country you hunt in and with the 3D patterns our manufacturers keep coming out with we have a great opportunity to become part of the forest we hunt in as long as we learn to sit still.A true test of your camo pattern comes when ole longbeard is within our limits to pull the trigger and we have to make those slight adjustments to get on him.Good camoflauge and knowing when to move can give you a little freedom to move undetected making it priceless in alot of cases, but it is truly amazing how an ole tom turkey can recognize something out of the ordinary and pick up movement! :)

RE: what's your camo pattern?

Rob,I tend to agree especially in early season. Not only matching your surroundings but your overall set-up is the real key to good camoflauge. You've hit the nail on the head by saying breaking up your outline.Obviously having the right colors is part of this but it doesn't matter what camo you wear you cant set-up in the middle of an open field and expect not to stand out!Grey is the key color in our habitat here and a combination of colors added to it plus a good set-up such as against a large white oak really break up your outline well in my part of the turkey woods!Good point my friend!!!

I have always broke up the patterns of my Camo while turkey hunting. I like the Fall Advanage for pants or bottom color and Realtree brown for a Top color, this is my early spring colors. As the season progress I will change my top color with the season and go to the Realtree AllPurpose green . I believe I would sooner look like a Real Tree then a Mossy Oak ...BT

I like them with Long Sharp Spurs....

RE: what's your camo pattern?

Have always preferred Realtree Hardwoods. Bought a set of Predator and NatGear for last year's elk hunting trip. Will use one of them this year on turkeys. Only problem I'm having is deciding which one. I'm leaning toward the Predator.

PowDuck, I think the patterns such as Predator, SticksnLimbs, and ASAT are your best choices in camo so I don't think you'll go wrong with Predator. These patterns just seem to do a better job of breaking up your outline.

RE: what's your camo pattern?

Rob/PA, the fascination for green in the turkey woods is because that is the most dominate color in the woods, around here at least, during the season.
Spring season here is only two weeks in late April, when everything is bloomed out in the most brilliant green you can find. Wearing the brown striped stuff would make me stand out like a sore thumb. Nothing in the woods where I hunt looks like that camo. Mostly pine tree with dark brown bark and oaks or sweetgums in the bottoms. Mossy Oak Break-up is 80% black now and of no use to me any more.
For me it's Realtree X-brown (has lots of green despite the name) or the Mossy Oak with lots of green leaves on it (Shadow Leaf I think). The art of camo is to blend in with your surroundings as closely as possible.

I live in Arkansas and use Mossy Oak Break Up year 'round. It seems to work the best for me in all situations.

Until the manufacturers come up with a pattern which looks like a fern leaf for us Pacific Northwest hunters, its gotta be Realtree Advantage Timber or Hardwoods. They seem to do just fine.

Tail Feathers, Check out this new pattern by Tru Woods. Their EF/S pattern might work well for you. I've yet to try this camo but so far I've heard a lot of good comments about its effectiveness. I'm pretty much a die-hard Predator or Sticks n Limbs guy but I might give Tru Woods a try. Here's the link:

RE: what's your camo pattern?

Tailfeathers, that tells me you know little about the science behind camoflauge. Please tell me then how I can have turkeys all but step on me in the open while wearing ASAT in the green woods......Tell me then why no animals, predator or prey has green as their primary color...in fact all animals are brown, tan and black...especially the female of all bird species. The only living thing that may think you stand out like a sore thumb would be humans and even then, I doubt they would see you in ASAT....you'd be shockingly surprised to say the least. But heck, yes your Realtree will work fine but ASAT allows me to even get away with movement on PA Gobblers and if you can get PA gobblers that close, you can get them close anywhere in the country.

RE: what's your camo pattern?

Rob I freely admit I don't know about the science of camoflage. I do know that I don't want to look like an animal in the turkey woods, I want to look like part of the landscape. So I'll stay with the camo I think helps me blend in with the greenery that is so abundant here in the spring.
I don't doubt one bit that that camo works for you and it may work for me if I tried it. I'm glad to see they're using scientific research in camo, it will surely improve the industry. I really like the look of NatGear for waterfowling, and will switch my waterfowling gear to that pattern as I purchase new clothing. They claim it's good for all types of hunting, but I prefer to try to look like the background I'll be up against.
I appreciate your info, but for turkeys, I'll stick with what has worked for me-RealTree or MO ShadowLeaf.
I'll be looking for pics of you in that camo this spring with a big ol' gobbler. Have a good season.:)

Realtree Hardwoods and Hardwoods Green for me. I really love the green works great in the spring and early fall

RE: what's your camo pattern?

I love the Woolrich Technowool, which only comes in RT Hardwoods HD.

BUT...Rob hooked me on the ASAT. I got a 3-D suit for bowseason. I was never detected, and for those that may doubt it, here's two examples that it works under any circumstance.

1) Climbing down out of an oak, surrounded by a hemlock, with my Summit Viper. Got to within 2 feet of the ground, and 4 doe walk out 20 yards away. One large doe was within 4 yards at one point, before they finally wandered off none the wiser...at least until I fell out of my climber because I was starting to get thigh-cramps

I had deer within range of a shot 75% of the trips into the deer woods this fall, which I attribute solely to (a) being higher off the ground, (b) better scent control, and (c) better concealment with ASAT. The first point illustrates ASAT.

2) When I first got the ASAT, I sat in a medium-cut (~16 inches high) clover/grass pasture, pretty much just for S&G. By nightfall, I had been visited by a flock of turkeys within 10 yards and a red fox almost urinated on this "funny bush" sitting in the middle of the pasture.

This Spring, I'll be wearing my ASAT over my RT Woolrich, topped with my Mossy Oak Shadowleaf vest. Late morning, I'll strip off the wool and go with jeans and the ASAT.

Tailfeathers, thank you sir and may the good lord bless you and yours with swinging beards. I know it's a hard sell being it doesn't appease the human eye. I simply know from many years of experience it works in all circumstance...thus the name All Season, All Terrain. My partner in the our outfitting business took it to Texas and in the green spring that is Texas, it worked flawlessly. I might not bring to the table a pic of me with my bird, I should however be able to share the pics with the clients I do have. I wish you a great season as well.

Strut&Rut,

That's what I'm talking about. Wearing ASAT is as close to invisible as one can be.
