because you never know who is setup already on that bird. You might accidentally shoot at them or visa versa(in their general direction). Plus the tom your stalking could even be a decoy. with as many hunters out as there are today, if your not careful, you could end up in a tight situation. This is the main reasoning on why alot of states dont allow it. if you do it in one of the other states, just be really careful[&:]

plus, who would wanna neak up on a turk when it is so much fun calling him in to your feet.:D Thstd what turkey huntin is all about.

Turkey Hunting is really one Turkey calling another especially in spring! :)

Seriously - go back and read as much as you have time here and then follow the upcoming threads that will happen! There are many tactics form runnning and gunning (locating a bird and then going after it) to patterning where the birds want to be and then set up a blind or just trust your camo.

As said there are many many very good turkey hutners where who each year bag a nice ole tom.

Agreed. Come January or February, you can literally stay in the turkey hunting forum all day with all the posts that are happening. There will be a post on just about every single topic you can think of and several more posts on topics that you didn't think of.

If you are new to turkey hunting, what I would start doing right now is get on the internet and find some example sounds that a turkey makes and start trying to mimic them. Start practicing on a mouth call. A mouth call provides a huge advantage because you can be calling without a lot of movement. Mouth call takes quite a while to learn, but is by far one of the best, most versitile calls you can use. Also practice on other calls such as a slate call and a box call.

Gear,calling,and all that comes along with the sport/art of turkey hunting is fun stuff, but it starts with having a place to put all that "stuff"to work!Having a place to go that you have scouted out and has huntable birds will give you a realistic place to start"huntin turks"!Lot of places have birds,but come season are severely overhunted and can ruin alot of that preseason enthusiasm.A good piece of ground that possibly is on a road less traveled or even a piece of private ground is a good place to start class on understanding how to hunt wild turkeys.Maybe you know someone who's a seasoned hunter and who will let you tag along.Even a hunt with a good outfitter can teach a newbie even a novice alot about huntin turks.....Those of us who've hunted these birds for awhile are still to the day learning and open to what works in the turkey woods!!!Keep havin fun...Bob..

After my experience this year, I would STRONGLY recommend a blind (if legal in your area). Unlike deer, they will not "wind" you and they don't give a crap about the blind as long as they don't see movement.

True, but I'm more of a run and gun guy. Not that I'll knock hunting out of a blind because I know they have their place in the woods, but it just doesn't appeal to me.

I start scouting about a month before seasonstarts and I figure out exactly where there going after they fly down everyday, well almost everyday. I try and figure out as many birds as possible so if Im not successful with the first one I move to the next bird and this usually works for me. Other wise, if I cant get any to come in I will go set up close to there roost in the evening and wait for them to come back
