Default Sunrise to 1:00pm - WHY?

why is Illinois' turkey hunting time from like sunrise to 1:00pm? Is there any other states with this time range why is it so short?

It's the same in Va. They say it's to keep from disturbing the setting hens during season?????

I could be wrong but I remember when I lived in Wisconsin and we had a Noon cutoff. The main reason the biologists there were wanting the Noon cutoff was an issue of hens not getting back to their nest before dark when they were flushed by hunters. They abandoned their search and roost and the eggs get too cold over night and do not hatch.

Of course a later study revealed that the percentages of this happening were very small and WI extended their time out. Like usual, this happened after I left the state!!!

Your state might site the above plus the fact that it reduces the hunting pressure for 4-5 hours in the afternoon.

Here in Missouri, we have a 1 p.m. cut off time also. Sometimes, I think it is a good thing. If you have been out since about 5 a.m. and have had no luck, you have put in an 8 hr. day if you stay til 1 o'clock. This gives you time to go home, rest up and plot a strategy for the next day. Of course, this works best for those who have vacation time during turkey season. If you aren't on vacation and just have a day to hunt then I could see why you would benefit from hunting until sundown. But hey, surely all of us who have the turkey hunting sickness this bad save up all the vacation time we can for the spring season!

I know when I hunted Wisconsin I was often looking forward to that Noon cutoff since your getting up around 4:00 AM. The bed was calling me for an afternoon power nap. Would then go back out in the woods and put them to bed and hope I'd be able to catch a tom or two goobling on the roost.

I see one of my questions has been answered ILL. is cut off at noon ! Thanks Bucky <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

The way I understood that some of the States the cut off was at noon or 1:00 because of giving the chance to the Hens to get back the the nest with out being distrubed. It alows the hen to incubate so many hours Per. day .This was setup in alot of states that have a lower Pop.rate , or the turkey was just stocked or released.

My understanding was after studies Bio's are saying that this is not the case now. Be honest I've only ever seen one turkey nest in all the years I've hunted, but then I'm looking for where I walk at the time and working the terain not looking for nests.

Mike the cutoff check time used to be 1:00PM but I had it changed a couple of years ago in a meeting with the MNR and turkey work group. Where I live and the lenght of a drive to the check station after you hunt till noon ,walk out ,or take photo's of a bird ,get in the truck and head there , there was no way I could do it in an hour, so they changed it till 2:00pm , also back a couple years ago they only had a few check stations also.I happened to be a 45 minute drive to any of them...BT

I like them with Long Sharp Spurs....
