multiple bearded birds...
you all know i killed one last week....got me thinking...
how common are they?? anyone know numbers, percentages, anything?? anyone know if its a genetic thing?? like can i kinda "expect" or up my odds by hunting in the area i killed mine? or is it a pretty random event?? just got me thinkin about all that...my dream was always to kill me a multiple bearded bird...i dont personally know anyone else that has..know a guy that seen 1 one year but wouldnt shoot because it was a jake. and im pretty sure i seen 2 jakes with them but i was driving both times so how knows... |

RE: multiple bearded birds...
I have known many that have gotton a double bearded tom. I have never got one myself but have seen hens with beards. I really think there are more then a person thinks. In Mt. I hear of friends and others that have gotten themeach season. I had a friend get a triple beard last year.

RE: multiple bearded birds...
If you look closely at turkeys pictures in books or magazines, you can see where there is an extra beard or two poking out on alot of birds. When i shot my double beard the 2nd beard fell off when i lifted the dead turkey up to carry out of the woods - so be carefull to check around after you shoot a bird in case it ripped a beard off after the shot.

RE: multiple bearded birds...
Was hunting in Kansas 10 days ago and a friend shot a jake with 5 beards! Check out this photo! I know that lots of folks that aren't aware of 'multiple beards' and don't even think to look for them miss the tiny ones that don't even protrude past the feathers in the breast. I've seen beards that are just an 1/8 or 1/4 of an inch before.

RE: multiple bearded birds...
I have shot 2 gobblers with double birds. Thats 2 out of almost 30 gobblers. My close friend who I grew up hunting with and has killed aobu the same number has also killed 2 (1tom, 1 jake).
It could also be the area, though.3 out of the above 4 were shot w/ in a half mile of each other. |
RE: multiple bearded birds...

RE: multiple bearded birds...
I almost want to say it is genetics. I shot a 3 bearded bird last year when hunting some new property. I found out latter there was 2 double bearded Toms taken the week earlier off the same land. That is why I think it is genetics. I believe it is more common than most think.
