Perfect Opening Day Hunt
#1
Helped my brother get his first turkey on Ohio's opening day youth turkey hunt. Weighed 21.5 Lbs with a 10 1/8 inch beard and 1 1/8 inch spurs. We set up in a spot that we knew they travelled on to get to a clearing in the woods. Heard 3 different sets of gobblers that morning. After about 15 minutes of doing some tree yelps and clicks, 5 gobblers and 3 hens flew down about 100 yards in front of us on a ridge. They slowly walked towards us on a deer trail. They stopped on the ridge about 35 yards away. We had some feather flex decoys set out in the little valley. The big gobblers strutted around for about 5 minutes and then started down the hill. As the first one got in a little opening i drew back my bow. I sent the arrow flying and it went right in-between his legs. He ran to his right down the hill, but then turned around and started jogging back up it towards his buddies. As he got back in the same clearing my brother hit him with a load from his 12 Ga New england Pardner Pump. We were so excited. Looking back the turkey was in the same exact place that i had missed a buck back in deer season (when am i gunna learn?). After we collected his trophy and took some pics we started on our way out. I let out a yelp from the mouth call just for S&G and 2 gobblers sounded off. We set up on them but they didnt feel like coming acrossed the creek in front of us. Still a great hunt.
PS ~ we have the whole hunt (26 min.) on video. Hopefully posting the kill shot soon.
