we havent done it in years. the last time i could remember doin it was when i was about9 years ago(i was about 7)and i was sitting out in the driveway lookin down in the woodsjustabout the time the sun was goin downand i could hear a big old gobbler. so i called to him with just my mouth(i used to be REALLY good at callin with just my voice beforemy voice changed haha) and a family friend blew hit to peices in the morning. we even got it on video tape.

Just as it is getting dark with an owl hoot for me and I don't like to owl hoot in the morning because they will often not shut up from the roost and that will attract other hunters.

Every year I promise myself that I will but after getting up at 4:00am, traveling to the farm, hitting the field an hour beforesunrise, hiking and hunting hard all day,I always run out of energy. By roosting time I'm already asleep! :)

i usually go out around 8 pmhere in wisconsin. i try to get about 300-400 yards away and just sit and listen. They usually gobble on their own but if not aowl hoot works great.

I usually get into a known roosting area way before roost time about 2 hours early... That way there is no chance of spooking the birds... Then I just pick a spot about 75 yards away and just sit tight and lisen... I stay in woods until just before dark and then I owl and check to see were the Gobblers are... It's sucks having to walk a 1/2 mile out of the woods in the dark...;)

RE: "roosting" birds

guys, from your experience, do birds sometimes roost close to the roads. i was hunting in maryland this weekend, and i got out of my car was walking into the woods and a damn bird was in a tree about 20 yards inside the wood edge. when she saw me she jumped down and flapped her wings. I have never seen a roosted bird (only 2nd year) so im not sure if they would be that close to the road, but i dont see what else it could be lol. a turkey in the tree is a turkey in the tree. if so, will she always roost there? she was by herself (or at least i didnt see any others). so i walked in the woods about 50 yards, set up, and then saw a hen. i heard some gobblers farther in the woods, but couldnt get them to come.

didnt mean to steal the post, just relates to the topic
