Locater call?
I know it has been talked about before, but which is better, owl or crow?
|
RE: Locater call?
If it is early in the morning where it is still alittle dark i use a owl. If it is light out i would just start using your turkey calls to get a response.

RE: Locater call?
What owl call do you use? I posted about the Primos Power Owl and I can only make it sound like a duck with any volume. Very very soft I can make it hoot. Any opinions?

RE: Locater call?
Ihaven't had any luck with either. Peacock scream and woodpecker work the best for me.;)

RE: Locater call?
Like anything with turkey calling it depends on the turkey.
Owls usually call before daybreak and crows anytime. Don't give up on them and try not to overuse them either. Make sure you can sound as good as possible before trying them. Otherwise the birds will just shut up. If you use turkey calls to locate make sure you are in a position to set up immeadiately if they answer and are close. |
RE: Locater call?
I've had much more luck with a crow call than an owl, but lots will say just the opposite. Last year was the first year I ever got a response to an owl call.

RE: Locater call?
Early morning, while it's till dark I use the owl call. When I hear the first crow of the morning sound off, I begin to use a crow call if needed.;)

RE: Locater call?
peacock or a coyote howler I might have more locater calls than turkey calls:D
|
RE: Locater call?
even though there are TONS of crows around i can almost always shock gobble them with my crow call. ive heard them gobble to REAL owls. never used an owl hooter. heard them gobble to dang near anything..trains, thunder(that was a GOOD locator), peacock scream, yote holes etc etc...but the only thing i carry and use is my crow call.

RE: Locater call?
I do a really good owl call with my mouth. Sounds waaay better than those owl calls you buy. Last year i used this method and had prolly around 10 different birds gobble. Right before daylight is when it works the best.

RE: Locater call?
the best would be somthing that isnt heard all the time. I carry a goose call as well as a couple of other waterfoul sounds in the deep woods gets them to gobble every time . coyote howler, boat air horn, just dont go useing it all day long but a short burst has got a couple of closed mouth gobblers to sound off when the didnt want to.

RE: Locater call?
It is all going to depend on where you live, and how the turkey are acting...but from my expierence, I have better luck with a crow call. I don't get much response from a owl call....

RE: Locater call?
Here in Missouri an owl call works pretty well if done at the right time. It's better sometimes just to let him gobble on his own if you know he is around within ear shot. The crow works the best for me all day long. I call aggressive to get a shock gobble. Most of the time I don't give a turkey call when trying to locate and walk. This could bite you in the butt. Especially when you and the turkey meet up face to face and the jig is up. Good luck

RE: Locater call?
never seen an airboat go through the everglades? no really those little c02 powered boat horns, i laughed the first time i heard it work i was floating down this river that went through a wooded section of state property that some guys who wereleaving for the day proclaimed there were no turkeys in there and they werent comming back. well we were fishing from the boat and we were horsing around and my buddy tried to scare me with the horn, when i came back down into the boat, three seperate gobblers sounded off. needless to say we came back the next day there to hunt . no turkeys to be heard, till we hit that boat horn. you see the turkeys in the area were so burnt out on owl, crow, and other noise they needed something new to sound off to.

RE: Locater call?
LOL! I was just kidding about the boat. I have one of those horns but it stays in my boat, not my turkey vest. It would be my luck to accidentally hit it during ol' Tom's final approach! Actually, any loud and unexpected noise could get them going. The first year I tried hunting turkeys I was treated to finding out I picked a good spot by having them sound off to the sound of my truck door closing.
