RE: I hate decoys!!
I realize that decoys can be a godsend somtimes. But I hate stuffing them in my pack, setting them up w/o trying to get spotted, and having to pick them up as quick as possible when you have to make a move.
I guess over the years I have modified my hunting from sitting tight and using decoys to my advantage to now staying mobile, going for the loneliest gobbler, and using my calling and the terrain. For all those that still cherish their decoys, I can still remember a hunt with my cousin (he was my turkey mentor) almost 10 years ago. We had a late morning gobbler respond and we decided to leave the decoys behind. I wanted to take them but he said we wont need them and I listened to him. I did the calling and had the 2 toms w/in 60yds after 20 minutes. they hung up and never did come the rest of the way. I gaurantee we would have got his bird if we had a decoy that day. You cant win sometimes, can you. |

RE: I hate decoys!!
I've finally decided to quit dragging along my turkey decoys this year. I just cant justify the need to use them anymore. I've carried along decoys since i began turkey hunting 13 years ago and have killed many birds with their help. Heck, at one point, I had names for them they worked so well. But over the last four years they have only been a part of one of my kills, and the decoy was lying on the ground upside down then (wind blew it off). I guess I am more of an aggressive turkey hunter now, lots of run and gun, but it works. And it seems to me that the turkeys have just gotten use to decoys and ignore them now. Either way I dont think I'll miss them. I think I spent to much time trying to set them up anyway. |
