RE: What do you like the best?
My mouth is to narrow and the calls are bothersome... I use a slate call and about 4 different strikers... Thats it....
The call I put most of my birds down with is a Knight and Hale "Ol' Yeller" I've tried others but they either sound too high pitched (Glass), Rattle in your pocket (metal), Lose its sweet spot (crystal)..... a plain old 15 dollar slate does it best.... Note of warning.. I bought a new slate from Bass Pro Shops and had it delivered... it was 17 dollars, shipping was 4 dollars.... and they charged me 3 dollars for the Bubble wrap!!!!! |
RE: What do you like the best?
I can make some pretty good sounds with the mouth calls and I use them most of the time since I'm hunting these birds with my bow.
I also like to use the Hurricane box call from Quaker Boy and the Triple Treat 3 in 1 frection call also from Quaker Boy , the three diffrent surfaces provide a variety of diffrent sounds in one easy to use call. |
RE: What do you like the best?
Mouth call all the way, then slate, the box call .

RE: What do you like the best?
Shallow Rio...I like your analogy of the box call to a musical instrument...A guy who is REALLY GOOD with a box is a wonder to listen to, and it just so happens that a friend of mine who is probably the best box call maestro that I've ever heard, IS a musician... He played guitar in local bands for years...
I'm NOT a musician, but I like a box call and I use one a lot....I also use mouth calls a lot, and although I'd rather take a variety of calls, I wouldn't feel handicapped if I had to spend a season hunting ONLY with my box calls or ONLY with mouth calls... I've never been real good with a pot type call, slate, glass or whatever, but I do usually carry one to use mostly for soft purring and clucking... Wingbones..??...I have a couple of beauties, custom made for me by friends who are artists at making them, but I've never really learned to run one well.. I can make NOISES with one, but with me running it , it sounds more like a herniated chipmunk than a turkey...:D.... |
