shot my big gobbler at about 35 yards...I was so nervous and I thought he was starting to get a hint that something wasn't right...so I had to shot then or it would have been never. Did it with a 3 inch shell, however, I know shot 3 and a halfs.

36 steps in a field. That bird flopped and flopped too, I now use a range finder and won't shoot past 30 yards. My gun patterns ok out to 40, but I like to be 100% sure its a clean kill, so 30 is the limit.

My uncle is an avid hunter. He and his buddies lease a 100 acre plot in western Tennesse. One time when they went hunting on that land, one of his buddies used a $1000+ Benneli with $70-$100 chokes and shot a tom from 87 yards, killed it,and broke it's wing!!!!:eek::eek::eek:

I personally found that hard to believe, but I know my uncle, he doesn't lie. They have it on camera, but it's not online. I may try to post it online sometime if he thinks it's alright, but he's not much of a computer guy; he only uses the internet for e-mail. Anyway that's one high quality gun if you can shoot and kill a turkey from 87 yards and break it's wing!!!

i took one this past season at 43 of my huge paces. i misjudged the distance but he went down. if i had known he was that far i would've waited longer.

Hey younggun, that is one quality gun but I believe it was more luck than the gun. You are only asking for trouble if you think you can consisitently kill birds that far with any shotgun.

IMO, your uncle is a Turkey Shooter and not a Turkey Hunter!;)

My furthest kill was 52 yards. I prefer inside 40 though.

It was one of my uncles hunting buddies, not my uncle.
My uncle only dreams he had a shotgun and chokes like that!!!:(
I wonder if those new shotshells that hubel (The 12ga from hell thread) customized could do that kind of shot?
Who knows? Maybe in 20 years, we'll all be shooting turkeys from200 yards with scopes on our shotguns, and then on this thread we'll be asking each other:
"How close do you let your gobblers get to you?"[8D]

"No ethical hunter would ever let a turkey get within 50 yards of him!"

Hard to believe, but hey, that's the future. Not that i'll have any part in it!:D

IMHO, the art of Turkey Hunting is calling them inas close as possible (25-35yds).Ifthey haven't mastered the art of calling them in as close as possible, then they are Turkey Shooters not Turkey Hunters![8D]
