Tagged Out 3 In 3 Days!! (Triple Beard!!)
Well, my season was one of the quickest in my turkey hunting career. Three days into the season and I dusted my 2 bird limit here in New York... and both were dandy birds!
The 2nd day of the season I went toe-to-toe with one of my best birds to date... a triple bearded tom! 21 lbs 9 oz. First beard= 9", Second beard= 7 1/2", & 3rd beard= 4 1/2", 1" spurs. It was a great battle between me and this longbeard that required some advanced techniques in calling and a bit of patience to knock him over. Here's the pics of this stud of a bird (goin to the taxidermist):
Then on the third morning I dusted a real nice tom at one of my other spots after I changed original locations that morning. This bird came in on a string mid morning with another bruiser longbeard. I was actually trying to put my buddy on this bird and have him blast him but our set up was wrong and the birds keyed in on my calling at my position instead of going to the deek out in front of him. I wouldn't be a turkey hunter if I passed up a nice tom that was in range and wasn't going to go my buddy's way knowing that I still had a tag to fill so I dropped him... he was on a dead run because I had to readjust to "swing" on him to get my bead on his noggin. They came to my extreme right and I knew it was now or never and would have to make noise to do so. I figured they'd run and I'd have to make the shot and my shot was right on the money. Blasted him with a load of Nitros to the head at 38 yds on a dead run! Stats were: 20 lbs., 9" beard & 1" spurs:
One of my Pro Staffers came out from Ohio (the one I mentioned on the 3rd day hunt) and me and one of my other Pro Staffers worked a bird for an hour and fifteen minutes to get him his first ever longbeard! We really cranked out the calling and I was even impressed with how we worked this bad boy. He hung up for a while and I did the old "walking away hen" trick that worked like a charm! It made the bird break and he walked right past my buddy and he dropped him at 30 yds! Here's the pics from that morning:
And here's a few of our birds minus the one I'm sending off to the taxidermist:
We've been runnin and gunnin and doin some striper fishing all week and it just don't get any better than this! God I love the spring seasons! Cheers!
