Get yourself a box of 20 Mule Team Borax from the grocery store. It's sold as a laundry detergent but it is essential the same Borax powder that you will see provided along with some fan mount kits. Coat the meaty portion at the base and leave your fan spread in safe dry spot for about 1 week. It will dehydrate and harden the base so it won't rot.

I use Borax,One box will last for Many Turkey season's to come.
I usually clean as much meat as I can off the base apply the borax, spread the fan and pin it With borax on the bottom and poured on the top.
Then clamp between two boards to flatten it out.(C-clamp)
I'm not sure what your direction say to do but that's the way I do it.

Neb. I used table salt because I had it available and knew it would work, but if you can getBorax you might be better off.

Capt146 I have always used table salt myself. Just wondering if it would make a differance as the years go by. Thanks

Use borax. After pinning the fan down it will be ready in a week. I've mounted a bunch of fans and have always used borax.
