Another bird for Team 6
#1
At the sound of the blast, he gobbled his last.
Scored again this morning - slightly better turkey than the one I took opening weekend. Total score was 66.5 (23 lbs, 10.5 in beard, 1.18" spurs).
Heard two gobbling on the east side of our lease. I could only get within 3/4 mile with my truck and had to double-time it the rest of the way. This part of the woods is fresh cutover, with logpiles and treetops everywhere. It can be very open in spots and I was worried about being seen. I snuck in close to one that was already on the ground and starting calling in the edge of a large clear spot where they loaded logs. The turkey would gobble but kept going the other way. I kept hearing another one behind me so I got up and started toward him. When I got closer I could tell that he was about 50 yards to the east of another large clearing. I stuck a decoy in the road to the clearing and then advanced about 30 yards (now I'm between the turkey and the decoy in the road) toward the gobbling turkey, sitting in a pile of fresh dirt in front of a small tree. The turkey immediately answered my yelp/short cutt and I knew I had him, as he wasn't more than 100 yards away and I hadn't spooked him. After only 2-3 minutes I could see him coming to the clearing in a half-strut. When he walked out and got behind a small log pile I soft called and he gobbled. He walked around the logpile and stuck his head up and saw the decoy. For the next few minutes he would strut, gobble, then take 3-4 steps toward me. Strut, gobble, take 3-4 steps. The sun was on him with nothing but air between us, and it was really a sight to see. I never made another peep, finally pulling the trigger at 27 yards. This is a really good turkey for our part of the world with pearly spurs turned slightly up, nice thick beard.
My immediate thought as I watched him flop was that this is better than sex!

Congrats, mouthcaller!! Hopefully I can help our team soon, our season
here in Arkansas opened yesterday but I haven't gotten to pull the
trigger yet. I am going to Kansas this week to hunt, maybe my luck will
change.
