Turkey Hunting Whether it's spring or fall doesn't matter to this bunch. Great tips on calling, bustin flocks, using blinds and more.

Default 90 hours in NY and this is what I got! *PIX*

Gang,

I just added up my hunting hours for the month of May here in NY. the total number of hours of hunting was 90 (not including wake up time and driving)

Here are my stats...

8 = number of farms I had to hunt
1 = number of Toms seen on the land I had permission to hunt - a jake
3 = total number of longbeards witnessed: all across property lines
10 = total number of hens witnessed
1 = number of gobbles heard on land I had permission
0 = number of fox seen while hunting
0 = number of coyotes seen while hunting
1 = number of coyotes seen while driving

Thank goodness I went to Ohio for some more productive and exciting hunting!

Nonetheless, it was fun trying here at home and I look forward to next year. I took this Jake on the third day on a pre-work hunt...

Agreed from me as well. I would have been happy with a jake this year and I do not shoot jakes! Go figure! Congrats in NY!

How many days were divied up by those 90 hours?

Did you guys in NY, who had lousy seasons, do much mid-morning hunting? My brother was severly discouraged, only hearing a few gobbles off the roost after ~April 15th, but I heard 2 or 3 birds gobbling hard after 11am this entire past weekend. That was in central NY...just curious...

Strut,

That was 31 days straight. 7 hours on weekend days and an hour or so each day before work. I set a record for myself for patience!

I hunted 21 days, including the youth hunt wknd for my son. I wasn't hunting myself, but was out regardless. That Youth wknd was most action my son & I had. Mid morning hunt, 4 toms gobbling, and called one in to about 50yds from my son's gun. Then he walked away. I did a previous post on that. Besides that day I had exactly 3 other days where I had some decent action. May 1st down to my camp in Cortland. I worked 3 toms throughout the morning. Everyone hung up about 50yds out. I tried decoys, no decoys, different calls, little calling to alot of calling. I tried everything I could think of including leaving my son, and sneaking away calling. Nothing bring those birds in close enough. Its same story down there every yr. Then another day down camp had 2 going around 8am. But nether would come in at call, just gobble from a far. That was the 13th. On the 23rd up here around home, Northern Tier. 2 toms gobbling on roost. Setup, did few clucks once they hit ground. Both pretty much shutup, and walked in opposite direction from my setup.
I hunted at all times of morning. Most days only for couple hrs, but a few days right from dawn until noon. Never came close to a shot, and nobody I know hunts turkeys got a bird, and most had about same kinda action I was. Seems the birds talked some the 1st wk, then again next to last wknd. At least in my areas. I feel the early spring played a big role in action. Farmers are alreadly cutting hay!
