Turkey Hunting Whether it's spring or fall doesn't matter to this bunch. Great tips on calling, bustin flocks, using blinds and more.

Default What to do with a hen.....

Took my 13 year old out turkey hunting Sunday, we are both very new at this.

We got there just after fly down time (you try getting a 13 year old out of bed at 3:30 [8D] ). We got a hen to answer immediately and had a good conversation going with her, but no gobbles. From where we were I was afraid to move closer because I couldn't figure out if she was in the field corner, or the woods just beyond that. If in the field and we moved down the trail she'd see us.

I got her riled up and she was cutting off my calls with clucks and yelps. We ended up moving off the field edge and setup 25 yards into the woods hoping to pull her to us, or hoping a gobbler would come. After around 10-15 minutes of arguing with her, I would cut her off and repeat what she was doing, if she went quiet I would call and she would cut me off. She didn't seem to be moving closer and soon started moving off calling. We stayed put for another 20 minutes quietly purring occassionally.

What else could I have done (besides get there before they fly down)

Smack yourself upside the head for getting up

Really theres nothing to do...If they wanna come they will come.

Roosting birds the night before ya go. About...when it starts getting dark try and call see what ya get. It dont seem to work as good all over tho.

As for the 3:30 am [:'(] It hate that to but its gota be done![:-]
