Mystery animal... any ideas?

1 Attachment(s)
Hey Guys,

Long time reader, but first time poster (I've managed to use the search function pretty well for any questions I've had).

So, I got this picture off my camera and can see the animal on the right is a coyote, but I have no idea what's on the left. So far from the people I've asked it's ranged from a dog, a hog, and another coyote. Any ideas what this critter is?

Thanks,
Mike :party0005:

first glance I say hog. Do you have hogs where you hunt? I wouldn't think hogs and coyotes would stand for each other being around tho. Maybe another coyote, a black one, but it sure looks like the rear end of a hog.

OhioBowhunter 02-11-2010 05:18 PM

i would have to say hog. but i think a hog that size would get ran off by the coyote? we dont have hogs around here so im no expert by far

leadoperator 02-11-2010 05:25 PM

From that pic it looks like a hog to me.

ksfowler 02-11-2010 06:06 PM

I am going to go with a black Coyote.

gunther89 02-11-2010 06:12 PM

I would also say a black coyote.

I haven't the slightest clue what it is. Maybe you could put out some sort of predator bait out in front of the camera and get a better view.

BigDaddy12t 02-11-2010 07:00 PM

I am guessing it is a black yote.

Sport4 02-11-2010 08:01 PM

...Hog....

chaxeemly 02-11-2010 08:09 PM

i would say it isn't a hog, just look at the tail: its wide and bushy. i would say its a black coyote.

Hunt4Life23 02-11-2010 08:52 PM

black yote

PastorJim08 02-12-2010 12:49 AM

I'd say another yote. By the way, welcome to the forums.

Blessings.....Pastorjim

Looks like hog to me.

Black coyote. Other coyotes body language/ear posture suggests it's not potential dinner walking next to him, but a buddy.

mlo31351270 02-12-2010 04:10 AM

Black coyote. Why would a coyote be hanging out with a hog.

duckhunter578 02-12-2010 04:59 AM

I have no idea what it is if it is not a black yote.

BuckAlley 02-12-2010 06:16 AM

I've seen black Yote color phases before. Def. black Yote. No way a hog as a tail like that. Like mentioned the other Yote seems to just be minding own business, non concerned. Yote all the way.

quickdraw62 02-12-2010 01:09 PM

Legs look kind of long for a hog. Plus Chax is right about the tail. I vote black yote.

2 Lunger 02-12-2010 02:47 PM

Never woulda thunk it until I blew the picture up. It's a hog. I really couldn't believe it.

janesburg 02-12-2010 03:26 PM

Black Yote

mlo31351270 02-12-2010 03:38 PM

I blew it up too and there is no way you can make out what it is. The picture is just not good enough. I still say two coyotes.

GTOHunter 02-12-2010 05:08 PM

From the picture provided I would still have guessed it is a Black Coyote because of the black tail looking fluffy/fuzzy?Since You say is definetly a Hog I'd be doing some serious Hog Hunting! :)

I noticed You have a Moultrie Camera...can You set it on Video to catch it moving/walking by again?

BowNC 02-13-2010 02:44 AM

Did a little exposure adjusting and it appears to be a black coyote. (As others noted...the bushy tail is the tell-tale.)

What you probably have is a breeding pair.

2 Lunger 02-13-2010 03:20 AM

Where is this bushy tail in which you all speak of? It's not sticking straight out, it's not down between its legs, and it's not to either side of the animal. I do not see it. If that is a coyote it dwarfs the other one and has the thickest legs, rump, and back of any yote I've ever seen.

Phil from Maine 02-13-2010 03:28 AM

I am guessing a dark coyote as well.. Although it maybe a hog because I stll am not 100% sure about a tail or not..

BowNC 02-13-2010 05:22 AM

Well, I'm not sure what other folks see when they look at their monitor. Monitor size and resolution may be a consideration.

With that said, what I see is the rump illuminated by the flash with what appears to me to be a large, bushy tail in the typical coyote "low mode".

Whatever it is...it's a cool photo.

sixgunluvr 02-13-2010 08:02 PM

What it is?

Looks like a HOG to me.

GTOHunter 02-14-2010 11:15 AM

Well I don't see a cork-screw tail if thats a Pig? LOL ;)

nyhunter89 02-14-2010 03:48 PM

I am going with the other people and saying coyote for a few reasons:
1. Compairing the size of the pig/coyote to the other coyote, the legs look too long to be a pig.
2. The coyote is not even looking at the the other animal, if it was a pig i think the coyote would be keeping its eyes on it.
3. Im sorry to say, i still don't see a curly tail on it.
(This is my opinion and my reasons for it)

genesis27:3 02-14-2010 04:03 PM

a pic of a yote with bad lighting.:barmy:

HOGHUNTINGUNLIMITED 02-14-2010 06:33 PM

looks like a black coyote to me!

1shotkill1993 02-15-2010 05:55 PM
