Wolf or Coyote?

Got this picture from my Cuddeback Capture this past week. Is it a coyote or wolf? Mind you, we've never seen a wolf on our property in NW Wisconsin but suspect they are moving into our area.

W9ARcher 09-09-2009 06:41 PM

This is a picture from the same camera a couple of months earlier which is definately a fox with an unknown critter in it's mouth. The fox and wolf/coyote are essentially in the same tracks so it's a good comparision on the size differential.

Dbldroptine 09-09-2009 06:45 PM

Id say wolf

Wolf...is my guess. Definately alot bigger than the fox.

leadoperator 09-09-2009 06:55 PM

wolf without a doubt

iowabuckslayer 09-10-2009 05:43 PM

the nose say's it's a wolf. There used to be a web site that told you how to tell a wolf from a coyote and coy/dog crosses by looking at the nose. i think it was on trapperman.com.

BigDaddy12t 09-10-2009 06:53 PM

Yep,I would say WOLF.

nodog 09-10-2009 07:49 PM

If that's a wolf we have them in N.W. Ohio. Saw them a couple years ago and have always wondered mostly because of their size. We do have some very big yotes.

allmightyhunter13 09-10-2009 08:23 PM

Is that coyote caught in a snare?

Yeah i think thats a wolf. Let me tell you, i live in northern wisconsi(right next to ashland or bayfield if you've heard of those towns) And wolves are HUGE pests up here.

W9ARcher 09-11-2009 01:36 PM

Yea, I'm south of Ashland in the Rice Lake area. I've heard coyotes in the evening and recently heard much different calls coming from the Blue Hills just north of our property.

The locals have also commented that several calves were taken out this spring which hasn't occured in 40-50 years around here so we're coming to the conclusion the wolves are moving into our area.

Thanks everyone for the candid comments. My dad, who grew up in this area, pointed out the long legs and remembers when wolves populated this area in the 40's. I really hope to see one during hunting season, provided I'm up in a tree.

jmas 09-15-2009 05:59 AM

Here are my pictures, they look like the one posted but a little smaller. I think mine are coyotes and I hear them yelling a lot of times. Now I'm not sure what they are since viewing this message. Southwest Wisconsin.

Siman08/OH 09-15-2009 07:50 AM

Looks like a wolf or a HUGE yote to me...great picture either way!

These are coyote's. Same with previous thumbnail.

Strutter! 09-15-2009 09:56 AM

They are definitely yotes. Nice pics on the cuddeback.

2 Lunger 09-15-2009 12:14 PM

Definately two wolves on the original post. All other pics have been coyotes.

Schobs 09-15-2009 12:49 PM

I'd say wolf, and if it's NW WI, you've definitely got wolves in the area. Now lets just hope you have some deer left by the time season starts.

YooperMike 09-15-2009 01:10 PM

Definetely

YooperMike 09-15-2009 01:11 PM

Definetely wolves, and a great pic, very cool. We've got them back home too, plenty of them. Between the wolves and the resurgence of the bear population, the fawns have a hell of a tough road these days.

fingerz42 09-15-2009 07:04 PM

looks like a wolf to me.. look at the head..

W9ARcher 09-15-2009 09:06 PM

Thanks everyone for the feedback. I think this gives me enough ammunition to go buy a handgun for some extra comfort while traversing the woods in the dark. I already carry "bear pepper spray" but probably would feel better with something that goes boom ....haha when I'm bowhunting.

The fawn population seems to be thriving this year as opposed to last year where the previous hard winter in 2008 led to smaller family sizes. I'm getting "triples" on a few cameras.

Our turkey population is way down the past year which I blamed on the fishers but I may have another culpret now. I assume wolves will take out turkeys. Then again the winter of 2008 may have played the same ill effect that it had on the fawn population last year.

Guess that's nature.
