Default D-40 Question

I just got a Moultrie D-40 Trail cam tonight at sportsmans warehouse and i put it out on our utility pole outside the house to try and get the neighbors cats and so i thought i would try to trip it by walking by it and the only time i could get it to flash was when i put my arm right infront of it. is this normal with these or did i get a defected one? Any advise about this camera is welcome.

Thanks

Put in the test mode and walk be it slowly it has a slow trigger , about 2 1/2 seconds . Any SD card should work , try to get at least 1 gig .

The cars might be a bit fast as a pass by, the new IR moultries have faster trigger times but my older flash style need to either have a deer stand in front for a few seconds or you need to position so the animals walk right at or away in other words aim it down the runs so you get a few moments of action in front.
