RE: wood selection for your bow
On my custom longbow, I used a heavy wood for the riser - gaboon ebony. The riser also has black glass in it. For the overlays, I used bright red chakte kok. It has tonkin cane limbs with black glass and carbon.

RE: wood selection for your bow
I haven't tried drowing a bow either; albeit, I feel like drowning a few of them every now and again...
ORIGINAL: gapshot It's true I do like a heavy bow; at this point in my life I can shoot them. Who knows what the future holds. I've never tried floating my bow, the few times I have fallen into a stream with it, I was always able to hang on, (hahaha). I have not heard that, but I was told to keep it waxed to prevent the woods natural oils from evaporating and cause the bow to check. Jim |
RE: wood selection for your bow
I have felt like submersing a few bows as well, not lately though been shooting pretty well. Finally shot the recurve I've been waiting for last friday. Hal (bowyer) hit it on the nail. I was shooting left and right almost perfectly. "It was scary", I was very happy. I tended to shoot high because the bow shoots faster and flatter than my longbow, even at the same draw weight of 70#. Now all he has to do is finish sand and seal it and it will be ready for that trip from CT to MA (Home). The final product is a 55inch recurve, riser made of cocabola and limbs of brown glass and rock maple. 70# at 28 inch draw. It shoots sweet. I'm geting all warm and fuzzy just thinking about it.
