If I get some I am going to "foot" them with a small section of aluminum on the outside. That might help

Wow stealthy, you know how to make a guy feel good about himself...lol. If you get the point to fit flush with the aluminum section and the insert, and would minimize the stress. Also, the shaft of the outside would make it alot harder to get the thing to split. That'l be ten dollars stealthy.
If you need some shaft cutoffs, I work at a shop and could save you some if you tell me the size you need.
