RE: DIPPING VS WRAPPING CREST
stay away from Bohning ..... far, far away.
Gasket Laquer dries in maybe 5 minutes at the most. I put 4 coats on (5 if its a new gasket) and then dip the crown on. It goes quickly, little mess, hardly any fumes. I have heard reports of the laquer cracking etc but that would far be the exception instead of the rule. ALWAYS carry carbons/aluminums IMO when hunting with woods and traveling - the change in temps/humidity etc MIGHT have an effect and you want to be able to hunt regardless. |
RE: DIPPING VS WRAPPING CREST
I am talking about doing carbon arrows - no wood..........
So I need to compile a list of paints I guess....... |
RE: DIPPING VS WRAPPING CREST
It wasn't the exception with me, it was the rule--I used it for years. I did lots, all cracked with the white laquer. Found out years later that most likely the culprit was laquer that was too thick--evidently the laquer I bought had been sitting on a shelf for a while, or was mixed too thick at the factory. I like the stuff ok for a quick fix, but I'll spray paint or stain my crowns on. For arrows I know will get shot a lot, I'll use the epoxy finish--a slower process, but much, much tougher and looks better when done properly. GL wears off my target arrows much faster--wouldn't be as much of a problem if I shot a lighter weight bow I guess.

Chad -
Epoxy finish ?? Who makes it ?? I am only looking to do a white crown, then Ill fletch with 4" Gateways feathers - 2 white, one barred white..... simple and easy to see....and HOPEFULLY look good ! :) |
RE: DIPPING VS WRAPPING CREST
Well, I have probably done 100 -125 shafts into arrows with no cracking with the GL. THis white GL is new, I have not used it before but so far works fantasitc. I'll let ya'll know if it fails.
For carbons ........ use cresting labels. Why ? Carbons aint traditional anyway, that they might be a techy product is irrelevant. They shoot, they keep the feathers bonded VERY WELL and thats all that matters when using carbons aint it ? Quick, easy, durable, work very well ............ and you don't have to buy all the stuff to dip/crown/crest/seal them and end up with arrows that have a crown that won't hold up after a few hundred shots. My opinion |
RE: DIPPING VS WRAPPING CREST
Mine didn't start cracking right away (else I wouldn't have used it so much), but in time very fine cracks became visable, then usually got bigger. I have some shafts I started years ago but never finished, that are sealed and never exposed to any weather, that have the fine cracks in the white GL cap.
Eightwgt, you make it yourself. 2-Ton epoxy and acetone are the main ingredients. I think I have the recipie in my e-mail--I'll look it up if you want a copy. Slower process, but looks and works great. Chad |

I thought you meant it was an epoxy paint.... Im just trying to crown my arrows white...... thats it and just want to use a readily available paint instead of ordering something......... I just looked at some wrapped arrows - I think Ill paint mine ! |
