Javalina are Mythical animals
 

We hunted hard all over Sierra Blanca Texas, and 8 good hunters killed 2 Javalina! Cheeky Buggers!!
Froze my copious arse, also, when it got down to 21 degrees(in the blasted desert!) and blew about 30 mph......good hunt!

the first hour of the first day, I could have shot one running at about 7 yards. that is, IF I didn't have my bow between my legs and my binoculars fixed on the final stages of a stalk in progress. At least he got his! I warned my bud about 100 yds away that it was coming. he shot and missed. We saw a grand total of 3 javalina. Another party saw a couple, but hadn't scored on one by the time we had to leave on Thursday. I love the desert. The light in the morning is undescribable, and it can be as silent as the grave. Almost impossible to move quietly. We saw Mt. Lion tracks, and were told that the rancher has a cat hunter come in every Sunday to try and kill them. They were fair game for us, but we didn't see any. I spent my last day waaaay up in the rocks in the hopes of seeing one.
We had an old shed to sleep in, and set up a target to shoot. we very quickly started shooting the nocks and shafts off of each other's arrows. Great sport! There was a guy named Bill from Colorado who shot a 68&quot; Matlock LB. I hit his arrows a bunch, and they wouldn't break! found out he uses maple<img src=icon_smile_angry.gif border=0 align=middle>
We ate well and had a good time. A couple days were above 60 degrees( and the rest were below freezing!!

John, isn't the desert a mystical place? You wonder how anything could survive and yet everywhere you look there are tracks of all kinds of critters.

Sounds like you had a great time John. When I was down near Rockport Texas the weather was unpredictable but we did have three days or so between Christmas and NewYears it got up to 80. I did not get out to hunt Javalina mainly because the fishing was so good and my host kept us in supply of live shrimp to fish with. I'm told next year to come back and they will turn me on to some pigs. I never saw a javalina down there except the road kill I saw the year before.

They are a lot of fun to hunt, but be prepared to be disappointed in the meat. It ain't too bad to start, but leaves an aftertaste much like they smell...<img src=icon_smile_tongue.gif border=0 align=middle>

Sounds like an awesome hunt John. Sorry you didn't score.

I don't have any experience with them but have read that if the knife that is used to remove the musk gland touches the meat at all, the meat becomes contaminated. I don't know if that means it gets a bad aftertaste or not, but it might.

SORRY TO HEAR YOU DID NOT GET ONE . I HAVE NOT HUNTED THEM IN 5-6 YEARS BUT WE ARE PLANNING A TRIP TO AZ FOR JAVELINA AND DEER NEXT JAN. TOOK ME 4-5 YEARS TO GET MY FIRST AND 2-3 YEARS LATER MY SECOND AND LAST. THAT WAS MY LAST HUNT FOR THEM. DID YOU TRY A PREDATOR CALL WHEN YOU BUSTED A GROUP I'VE CALLED THE SAME GROUP BACK IN 3 TIMES. THESE &quot;PIGS&quot; ARE REALLY A PERFECT CRITTER FOR BOWHUNTING.
