A Gripping Survey

I'm curious what style grip most of you use. Please indicate whether you shoot with a split finger (Mediterranean) grip or three fingers under. Also please indicate whether you shoot a recurve or longbow. In my case, it's split fingers with a longbow.

Jack> You've seen me shoot. I may be a little unorthodox, but using both hands on the grip adds to stability and pulling the bow with the primary and second toe isn't that hard to learn. I DID get disqualified once for using the big toenail as a release.

John, as long as the toenail was touching the nock you should have been legal.:)

John, that's tourney-legal w/a longbow as long as (like Floxter said: one toenail touches the arrow nock &) you're not shooting 3-toes under, right?

me: split finger & middle finger anchor at corner of my mouth, recurves/longbows

Toxophiliac - Bocote riser with purpleheart strips, tonkin cane limbs, black and red micarta on the back and limb tips (my only change if I could have it done over again - I'd choose something besides red) . I shot it after selling the Horne Combo bow - man, theres a world of difference - the Adcock bow is SOOOOOOO smooth. Might be the cane, might be OL's design, I dunno, but I love it.

I've started shooting 3 under and doing well shooting instictively but my buddy says I'm supposed to gap shoot when using 3 under. I don't know why but it's working for me. Dick

Split finger with LB and Recurve; middle finger to corner of mouth. I shoot more consistent with a shallow fingertip grip.

Split Finger - Recurve

Floxter 02-12-2002 07:46 AM

RE: A Gripping Survey

Here are the results:
17 Total Respondents
13 split finger
4 three under
10 of the 13 split fingers shoot longbows
3 of the 13 split fingers shoot recurves
2 of the 13 split fingers shoot both
4 of the 4 three under shoot recurves
1 of the 4 three under shoots both
I guess this indicates that longbow shooters tend to prefer split fingers; probably a result of IBO rules mandating it in traditional class. Recurve shooters tend to prefer 3 under; probably because they can use it in IBO and it provides a higher anchor.

As I appear to be the only 3 fingers under person that shoots both a recurve and a long bow--does that mean I am in a class by myself,or just odd? Cam

Target rules got nothing to do with my shooting split fingered. You can thank Chuck Adams for that one. It was his how to book that got me interested in shooting and I shot the compound how he suggested, split fingered with a tab. Just stayed with what I knew when shooting the recurve and now the longbow.:)
