Shooting carp...

Anybody into bowfishing with their recurve/longbow?

I like to go in the shallows with a canoe with my recurve. I keep the shots close and in water less than 2' deep. That way I don't need a string on my arrow.

Heck yea Proline, I love it! But I never tried it out of a canoe, I tried standing up in one of those once & well, nevermind...but I had a lil "runabout" till a couple years ago & got into a bunch of fish every Spring. I haven't got as much shootin in since I sold it, but stalkin em from the bank is great fun too! I always wanted a big old 'gator'gar, shot (missed more) nuthin but small ones so far...if anyone hasn't tried this they're missing out on "boatloads" of fun!!

One of the greatest highs that I have gotten shooting traditional equipment.
It is great seeing that arrow slice through the water when it is sticking out of a 20 lb. carp.

Almost as good as buck hunting. I live for the spring spawn when they have their backs out of the water. They are in the "Rut" then!

Haven't done it in a while; just don't like the mess. Bowfishing is what got me into traditional archery. I was shooting an Oneida Eagle compound, rigged up an old recurve for bowfishing and found out how much more fun the recurve was to shoot and switched.

What do y'all do w/the "trashfish" after ya get em in? I used to give em away, but donno anybody that'd take em now. Seems like a waste to just leave em laying on the bank...

Planting them works excellent on the veggies.

I have a 17 foot Cedar Maine Guide cannoe that is perfect for standing up in and drifting over unsuspecting fish. My 18 foot Lund Alaskan with an electric motor works better because I can quietly follow the carp in the shallows as you can see him before he sees you. I'm starting to get the itch to go fishing again.

Chessbum, I am going to have to meet you some time. I just opened an office for the company I work for in Washington I didnt realize where it was until now. I live in Hartland about an hour down M59 from you.
As far as planting them goes do you all cut them up into pieces or place them in the ground a an entire fish. How deep do you put them?

Us Michiganders should go out and bowfish sometime.

Never shot out of a canoe. I use mine to get to the islands, then get out and shoot them from the bank. Lots of fun.

Ya'll don't fillet that pretty dark brown meat into thin strips and fry them in a deep fryer with hushpuppies ??? :)

Actually, on the Buffalo river, my Dad grew up snaggin suckers and they would can the meat and then make fish patties out of it. Of course, river suckers have white meat - and they don't smell either

RE: Shooting carp...

One Eye I have bow fished from shore and boat for these carp but not in the spring when they are spawning which I understand is the best time to get them. I usually wrap any fish I don't want in a bag and put it out in the garbage. My wife doesn't want me planting them in the garden as the racoons dig them up. I hear some people chop them up and use the carp for bear bait. I usually fish Lake St Clair and St Johns Marsh with a Retriever reel and a 35lb Pearson Recurve. On the Marsh they are hard to hit because they see you drawing and take off just as you release and on the boat you see them sunning and shoot and the arrow usually goes just over or under them and they take off and you track them down with the trolling motor and maybe get another quick shot. I miss more often then I hit as I don't take the time to practice with my equipment but I did get a head shot last year. If you'd like to go out this year let me know and we can get together and do some spring bowfishing. Yes Tox you can come too but you have to wear your life jacket, bring a permission slip and a hot lunch (for three)from your mom along with you.

Chessebum, I was jsut in your neck of the woods again today. I will have to take your word for it there are lakes out there
On a serious note I would like to go after carp some time. I have a few shallow lakes and swamps out it these parts that would be good in the spring or we could go out where you are.
I am starting to get the impression that Tox is a young'n.

Tox is a youngin but a good youngin because he works for a living and buys his own bows. And not only works but he works at Gander Mountain. I wish my kid worked there.

yea, I am 17. Having a Gander MOuntain employee in the house has its advantages. My dad is getting on me to get his module replaced for his PSE Carera wheelie bow. It broke a couple days after he got it, and I can't get my Manager.....whose name happens to be Chad.......to get it sent in. Can't beat the price on the bow though.....$550 bow for less than $200. I get some nice things for myself also. I got a nice breakdown shotgun case that fits my recurve for half off because a customer reset the combo, and nobody could figure it out. I found it though .
My mom will not make me hot lunch, let alone 3. I can rig up a couple.....but you will never ask me to again (cause it will be too tasty?)!
And remember Chessbum...if you need anything let me know.
