Calling Mule Deer

I just got back from a Mule deer hunt in Wyoming, where I experienced something new. On a slow day when we weren' t seeing many mulies in the timber, our guide used a fawn distress call, the kind predator hunters might use. I couldn' t believe the reaction. In a area where we had seen no deer, within two minutes, we had does and small bucks litterally boiling out of the timber to check us out. We tried it in several locations and about 2/3 of the time we got the same reaction. Never did result in any bruisers, but it sure did produce deer. Have any of you ever tried this.

I mouthed a call that I' d heard a fawn use when it got seperated from it' s mom. It sounds kind of like (meeyew) with the emphasis on MEE and less on the YEW and very high pitched. Used it more than a few times and it worked to bring out does and some smaller bucks, most of them spikes or antlerless, which aren' t legal game here in Calif. But like you said, no big boys responded.
