What' s Everyone Up to?
Been pretty busy here--about to recover from Cloverdale, now I have to start getting ready for the Alabama State Traditional Championship in August. That will be my last big shoot for year. I know I need to start looking at my hunting spots and see if I can figure out what the deer are doing, but dang it' s hot! Hope to do some bowfishing soon, other than that it' s bussiness as usual. Oh yeah, trying to get some information together for a bear hunt in BC next year--never too early to start planning for that! How about the rest of you?

RE: What' s Everyone Up to?
I just got done overhauling an old Pearson Colt that a friend of mine gave me. Twisted limbs, banged up, bad tiller, too much poundage and not worth much other than strength training my shootin' muscles. Narrowed the limbs to cut the draw weight, radiused the shelf, sanded it all down and refinished it. Can' t wait to lauch a few arrows out of it.
Other than that, same ol' same ol' . :D |

Setting up a new bow!
|
RE: What' s Everyone Up to?
Waitin on the new bow, a used bow from ebay, ponderin what I' ll do about arrows and all that, working and trying to find time to shoot. Trying to get ready for squirrels and woodchucks. Went fishin today but didn' t catch anything, nothing was hittin at all. I feel like a little kid; everyday on comin home from work I' m wonderin if today' s the day. Other than that, it' s just another day at the office. Brandan |

I think the mailman has run off with my new Crusader:(. Chad shipped it last Monday and it hasn' t come yet. Poor mailman thinks I' m insane. Met him at the door every day this week. Just so happens I needed to be home from work when he showed up;) Sitting out in the yard today and the mailman comes around the corner and I hear my wife say Uhhh Nooo. I turn around and he' s stairing at the two of us. I asked, he said no Bow:( Torture!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I bet one of the mailmen is a Black Widow shooter and was so impressed took it hostage[>:]

RE: What' s Everyone Up to?
Just got back from a one week float trip on the Deschutes River in Oregon. Did a bunch of flyfishing for trout and scoped a number of mule deer in the hills in the late evenings. I' m thinking I may have to do this trip again during archery season. Other than that, I' m scouting for elk in the coastal range.

RE: What' s Everyone Up to?
Working the bugs out of a new Black Thunder longbow I received last Tuesday. After the Tannehill Charity shoot and the Elberton shoot, I determined that the used Black Thunder I bought was too heavy for me to use as a dual purpose hunting and 3D bow. So I decided a compromise would be to buy a new one at a lower poundage that I could handle and that would be adequate for deerhunting.
It is 62" n-t-n, 48#@28" , cocobolo riser with bocote 1/4" accent stripe, bocote accents on belly side of riser and limb tips, cocobolo accents on backside of riser and limb tips, two yew lams sandwiched around a walnut core, a layer of carbon over the yew lam and under black glass on the bellyside of the limbs, and clear glass over the yew lam on the backside of the limbs. The bow can be viewed at the following link: http://photos.yahoo.com/bc/lamb1647/...ongbow&.view=t The pictures really don' t do the cocobolo justice. It almost looks like ebony or black phenolic in the pics. Actually it is a deep red with black and purple streaks. Print number 6 of 6 gives a bit of a hint of the true color of the cocobolo. It is a very sweet shooting bow, smooth as silk, and very quiet. When I focus on where I want to hit and get a good clean release and don' t drop my bow arm, it hits where I' m looking within 2" out to 20 yards. I haven' t shot it past 20 yards as of yet, but I' m working my way out. I can actually hold it without getting the shakes like I did with the 53#@28" bow. Bill |
RE: What' s Everyone Up to?
Im gonna work 24 more hours of overtime next weekend, then Im going to fish like theres no tomorrow, and get to shooting the bow. Gotta get ready to moose, then bear hunt with Brian, then whitetails. Gonna be another busy fall, but hey, I' ll suffer through it. :D:D:D
Brian and John both drew bear tags this year, so I am the designated camera man. Looks like I might get to participate after all. |

RE: What' s Everyone Up to?
I' ve been working on my 1969 travel trailer so I' ll have a place to crash on my new property. I' m heading down to put in a privy and set the trailer next weekend. Maybe a little scouting too. Dick

RE: What' s Everyone Up to?

ct bowhunter- yea i know the feeling, soon my new bow will be shipped. |
RE: What' s Everyone Up to?
Was doing some preliminary elk hunt planning but then my " any bull" moose draw tag came through so that changed that plan. So I guess it' s back to the central north to chase swamp donkeys. Oh well, the sacrifices one makes! :) It' s my " busy season" work wise but looking forward to a couple of weeks off reclining by the lake come August.
RC LB- working on the info! |
RE: What' s Everyone Up to?
Been busy practicing for the NAA Outdoor Target Nationals later this month. I' m registered to shoot in the Traditional Tournament and the Masters 60+ FITA. Looking forward to a solid week of nothing but shooting.

RE: What' s Everyone Up to?
Non Typical, Is this bow up for sale? Was not clear if you are getting bow up and if so how much!:)
|
RE: What' s Everyone Up to?
Silent String,
The bow in the pics is my new bow and is NOT for sale. I traded the old bow towards it. The pics on the link have been updated and they show the cocobolo much better. to get a real good view of the pics, click on the first thumbnail and then click on the enlarged picture. It will be enlarged again to greater than full screen. You can scroll down and to the right to get a full view. Please ignore the tall grass in pic #4. The deer back by the fence has not been eating very mcuh due to the heat and therefore is not keeping the grass short like it should be!! ;):):D Bill |
RE: What' s Everyone Up to?
Just got back form a week in Alaska on a " BIG" float trip. (cruise). Been early scouting for whitetails and have seen some dandy' s. Hey Floxter, could you get me some info on the NAA shoot? My son and I have always wanted to participate but really didn' t know how to get involved. Thanks!

RE: What' s Everyone Up to?
Creating another ironwood selfbow for a friend and getting some article idea' s out there.
Completing them is another story. |
RE: What' s Everyone Up to?
Thanks John. So far I' m having trouble just breaking 1000 in practice with the FITA bow, so I won' t really be competitive, but with luck I won' t come in last. And at least I' ll have fun and may even learn a thing or two from the other competitors.

RE: What' s Everyone Up to?
Well, the last 7 months or so have been pretty interesting to say the least. Spent time in Nevada, Idaho, Washington, Oregon and a few weeks in the wild here in Central Ca. Thought I' d get away without getting poison oak rash, but I guess the last few days out I got into it and a spot or two showed up on my ankles. Not too bad for me, but I got a heck of a rash from what I used to dry up the rash (caladryl), guess I' m alergic to something in it. Anyway, I was doing service for different people. Helping them with chores they can' t do themselves and so on. Just figured that it was time to give back for all that' s been done for me over my lifetime. Did a lot of Elk and whitetailed deer stalking and did lots of stumpin while I was at it and met a whole lot of compound shooters that thought I was nuts for shooting perfectly good arrows into old cedar stumps, lol. Home now for awhile, then I' m hoping to get to do some serious hog and blacktail hunting for a few weeks down the coast.

RE: What' s Everyone Up to?
Mike,
It is good to see you posting again! Glad you had a great time in your travels. Wish you the best of luck in your hunting season this year. I hope to go hog hunting next weekend. We can hunt hogs yearround here in SC. Bill |
RE: What' s Everyone Up to?
Thanks Bill, it' s good to be home. We got hogs year round here as well, but wifey is getting some time off pretty soon and she' ll be going with me this time out. Should be a great time for both of us.

RE: What' s Everyone Up to?
Mike,
Glad things have been well for you. Moving back to my hometown of San Diego at the end of the month with family in tow. Hopefully I' ll be able to find a place to hunt hogs and deer somewhere in California. I' ll miss the whitetail deer in Ohio. Recently made the switch from recurve to longbow. Found a very nice Quillan Bamboo Longhunter. Not as fast or pretty as some of the other popular longbows, but it is still a sweet shooter, light in the hand, and spits the arrows out there with authority. I have to admit that I enjoy shooting longbows more then I did recurves. It was a just a matter of trying one. :) Best Regards, Jose |
RE: What' s Everyone Up to?
Mike,
Good to have you back -- missed your posts. |
RE: What' s Everyone Up to?
Jose, there is some good hog hunting down south. Don' t know how far you' ll need to travel though. Santa Catalina Island has goats and hogs if I' m not mistaken. Lots of open country to my understanding and I also understand that shots are longer than the average. I' ve never hunted the Island, but I hear it' s a real gas. Good luck to you and your family with the move. Hope all is well with you all.
Jack, thanks for the welcome back. Hope all is well with you and yours. |
RE: What' s Everyone Up to?
Mike,
Thanks for the tip. I' ll look into the Catalina Islands and see what I can find out about it. I' ve been told that there is good hog hunting at a military base somewhere in central part of the state. Ft. Ligget??? When I was still in the Navy I had some shipmates on base that hog hunted at Camp Pendelton. Don' t know if they' ve closed that down since 9/11. Mike thanks for the well wishes. Good luck and many blessings to you as well. Have a good season. Jose |
RE: What' s Everyone Up to?
It' s been a while since I have posted. I' ve been shooting my new crusader since I received in back in April, what a sweet shooting bow. I can' t say enough good things about it, a true work of art.
Any tips on silencing my Crusader?? Also, I' m moving to Lemoore, CA in a few weeks (central valley, 35 miles south of Fresno) and looking for any info on areas to hunt out there?? |
RE: What' s Everyone Up to?
Hey Dave--glad to have you back! To get the Crusader as quiet as possible, try this. First, start with a naked string--no silencers, just a nockset. Tinker with the brace height until you find the spot where it is quietest (it should feel/shoot the best at this spot also). Second, tie on some silencers (I like rubber whiskers) so they can be adjusted. Shoot, move the silencers, shoot again. You will find that silencer placement can make a lot of difference. Move them an inch or so at a time. A second small set might help even more--after you find the spot for the first set, do the same thing with the second (if needed). Of course the right arrow and heavier arrows do a lot toward quieting a bow too.
Hope this helps--if you need me, just holler. Chad |
RE: What' s Everyone Up to?
dathein,
You might want to check out the state conferences on the LW. There' s much information on hunting in your area. Hogs, blacktail deer, Roosevelt Elk in Northern California, Oregon, and Washington. Good luck with the move. Looks like I' m not the only one relocating this year. God bless. Jose |
