Death of the crusader
Well thought I would drop in. Fishings been good. Kings are slow one day hot the next, same with the halibut. 2 days of as fast as you could reel them up halibut fishing, my arms are dead. Pulled some pots today, full of dungies crabs. What a hoot. Whales everyday, eagles everywhere. Going home is gonna be hard!
Yes my first crusader is DEAD! Well sort of. I knew it had a crack but didnt realize how bad it was. Sorry Chad this is the only way I can get ahold of you from here. I stopped by Juneau on my way to Sitka and had Steve H look at it. (whitebison longbow company owner in mo is now in juneau ak and isnt making bows anymore) He broke the bad news, she' s waiting to blow! Not 1 but 3 cracks in the beast......Glad I brought backup, now just gotta find time to shoot and a place to do it. up at 3:30 not done at work till 5:30-6. Hopefully I can finally have my hands on one of steves bow' s here soon. [:o] We' ll see...... well off to dinner, hopefully yall is having a good summer! |
RE: Death of the crusader
I hope you give her a proper burial. I think your talking about the bow you used on all those hunts? What a shame. Hopefully you find a new one that is to your liking.
|
RE: Death of the crusader
Sorry to hear that, Dan. It' d be hard to part with something that you had with you through all that huntin. I second the notion that a proper memorial at least is due. Good thing for back ups though. Brandan |
RE: Death of the crusader
Well as one dies one is born. My new Marc Special Crusader should be here tomorrow. I hope I can take it hunting as much as LilHunter:D
|
RE: Death of the crusader
CT, if we could only be that lucky. Sheeeesh, use it as much as Lil' , are you dreaming as much as me?:(
|
RE: Death of the crusader
What was I thinking[:o], probably never get to Alaska to hunt:(
|
RE: Death of the crusader
CT, NEVER say never. Alaska is my all time goal. I want to be able to hunt the whole season too. One of these days..........................................
|
RE: Death of the crusader
gee guys, Ak is much more doable then yall could ever imagine. Even more so when you know someone here, not to mention he is a guide [8D]. SHEESH!
As for the bow....well I hope it will last for this sheep season. I doubt it. Got an email from Marc so who knows. Heck I cant find a stinkn place to shoot down here. NO BOWHUNTERS. The ones who are (Doug Borland.,....remember Jay Massey and the Moose John Days) dont answer their phones!!! Looking for burlap and some shrink wrap to get my sentman up and shooting. I dont think I have EVER eaten so good though. Crabs, shrimp, salmon, halibut, bou, moose, etc etc etc......And loosing weight at that! [:o] I' ll try and get some pics of this place when the weather finally gets better. Been pretty snotty most of the time. When we do see sun I dont have a camera at hand! |
RE: Death of the crusader
Hey CT, when are we booking our trip with Lil' ? :D:D:D
Man alive Lil' , it sounds like your just hating that new job.;) You' ll find a place to shoot. Heck, use your buddies sleeping bag all rolled up, that should work fairly well. [&:]:D[&:]:D |
RE: Death of the crusader
Kip any time:D. My wife says if I buy one more bow or talk about one more hunting trip I better plan on living off of what I shoot and living where ever I go. I guess Alaska might not be that bad;):D
Waiting on my new Crusader as we speak. Came home from work early to meet the mailman. Sure hope it comes today! |
RE: Death of the crusader
Sorry to hear it Dan--man, I wish that bow could talk! Was Marc ever able to figure out how old it is? You' ve pretty much put it through the wringer by yourself!
Glad things are working out for you up there--sounds like you are living a dream. I gotta' figure out how to get up there and do some hunting--problem is, I will want to stay a month at least--maybe I' ll strike gold or something...... Chad |
RE: Death of the crusader
put it through the wringer? explain.
if I dont hear from ya, I' ll call ya in the next couple days! |
RE: Death of the crusader
Hunting in extreme conditions! I wish my Crusader had seen half the action and countryside yours has....
Chad |
RE: Death of the crusader
Extreme, no doubt. But for any bow on the market to go bad in 3 years (considering its prior service to its old master of arms to be nothing more then 3d shoots and ole whitie' s)....at the cost they are going for now I' d save my money and hunt with the rifle! [:o] who knows I just might have to if I am going to hunt at all...........
|
RE: Death of the crusader
Most likely just a flawed piece of wood--that stuff happens--but I figure Marc will make it right if he can. No idea if the original owner took proper care of it either (I know of some serious 3-D shooters that like to shoot broomstraws). No problems with mine with several years of use and abuse (no ice though--generally the only ice we see in MS comes from the freezer-lol). The got to be doing something right--can' t stay in bussiness 30+ years if you aren' t. Anyhow, give me a holler when you get a chance, and I' ll see what I can do--we' ll make you happy one way or the other![&:]

RE: Death of the crusader
we' ll see what happens. As it stands the sentman is about ready to hit the trash pile. I think I could throw my arrows more pleasently then it shoots them.
I am about ready to back out on this sheep hunt for obvious reason' s. No bow. Dang did I say that, I own 11 of them LOL! But go figure no other bow to shoot even remotely close to the old crusader and no materials at hand to try to get one up and running. I might be off tomorrow. That said I have an offer to deckhand on someone else' s boat with the cruise ship folks....so maybe not. If so I' ll call around noon my time, if not, I' ll email as you obviously didnt get the last one. We do save them in a folder at the house so I can email it to you when I return sometime this fall. Gotta go, dinners on the table, salmon and noodles, yummm!!!! |
RE: Death of the crusader
Dan, I never did get an e-mail from you. Try both of [email protected] and [email protected]. Did you get mine?

I don' t get it. Dan, you bought the bow second hand? It served you well for, what, 3 years hard hunting in Alaska? Sounds like a heck of a bow to me. I' ve seen some of the rifles that have been in service in AK and a year up there is like a dog year. You said you knew it had a crack. Wasn' t that the time to get it fixed? Not low-rating you, but I think I' d retire that one with honors. |
RE: Death of the crusader
Dan,
Your bow has been exposed to three years of slop and glop, cold weather, snow, heat, and tons of hunting ventures. Does it have a cocobolo riser? Cocobolo has a tendency to split under the best of conditions. Under the conditions to which it would be exposed of three years of near year round hunting in Alaska, it wouod be even more prone to do so. Retire it to an appropriate place on the mantle and work up your other Crusader, as I recall you have two, and take it out for some punishment and hunting. Enjoy young fella!! Bill |
