I'm guessing that this sort of post pops up rather regularly, but ... if, and right now that is a big one, my shoulder heals up fine I am going to get back into hunting with a "traditional" bow. That is where I stated in 1964. I don't imagine I will ever be able to can handle more than about 60#. Past 2 seasons my shoulders ahve been so busted up that I have been sing a X-Bow. Nothing against that, just want to try to fget back to my archery huntiong roots. I'd like to get fully geared up for under $1000. Looking for advice on a good preforming bow and shafts. I am in central Al. so if you know of any good traditional bow shops within about 200 miles of Birmingham, that would help me out as well. Thanks

I don't know about bow shop locations, but I believe Lynn Harrelson is in AL. I'm about 2.5 hrs. from B-ham, just East of Tupelo, MS. I don't have much of a shop, but you are welcome to come by and shoot bows with me.

There are several big tournaments held at Tannehill St. Park near McCalla. The Howard Hill is coming up, the ATSB Children's Hospital shoot and the AL state championship also. All of these will have vendors, with the Hill probably having the most. Lots of bows there to try out, plus most people there will let you try theirs.

You can get set up for well under $1,000, with all new equipment...or you can go used, but won't get a warranty with most bows.

No reason to go with 60#, especially if all you plan to hunt are whitetails and smaller game. My best friend's daughter killed a whopper doe season before last pulling maybe 32# on a recurve. 40# is plenty, and much easier on the shoulders.

I've owned several of Lynn Harrelson's bows....he builds a great bow [longbow or recurve]...he's a great guy too.
April 24,25 at Tannehill State Park, they're having a traditional archery tournament.
There will be bow-makers there at the shoot, that would be a GOOD TIME to try some different bows.
