When you tiller a laminate bow, you take material off the edges of the limbs, correct? What do you use to do that, a scraper?

That is primarily for glass lam bows. Since this is an all organic bow, and my design is pretty close, I will be tiller from the belly. That is why I made the belly lams 1/8" parallel. Ill only hit the sides if I see some limb twist, or high spots. But when I looked atthis bowthe other day, everything was jiveing pretty good. I used the deminsions from a board bow design I worked out last summer. I like to use a design that is pertty close so I dont have to worry about taking too much wood off during the tillering. I didnt get a chance to work on the tiller last night, but ill do my tillering with 45 girt sandpaper. Usually I start with card scrapers, but since this design was pretty darn close, ill probably be able to tiller it with just sand paper.

I went in the shop and did a little tillering. I got the limbs bending even and lowered some high spots on the lower limb. Got her bending to 20" at 50lbs.

I went ahead and braced her with a short string. About a 5" brace.

I measured the tiller at brace and found this bow has about a 1/8"(-) tiller.Im beat tonight, so Ill fix that tiller tomorrow and drop the weight. Tomorrow ill soften the upper limb till i get close to a 1/8" (+) tiller.

I realize that is a tiller string, but to me, the untrained eye, it looks way too stiff mid limb down. Like any time now, its going to break at the fades. Maybe thats where I mess up. I soften up the mid limbs more during that stage.

R-D tiller looks crazy. Much different than Dtillering. It takes a little more practice then D tillering. Some of the biggest mistakes ive made, tillering an R-D bow, was to lossen up the midlimb too much. If I soften the midlimbs, ill have to go back later and tiller the rest of the limb to it and lose a lot of weight. The fades look real soft because it has a deflexed grip. Im getting the right amount of bend at the fades. This is actually looking real good. Once I start tillering with a short string, it will look much different. Long strings on a R-D bow will fool you.

I'll definetly have to start with a deflex riser when I do start. Those R-D limbs are deceptive. I wouldn't know where to begin tillering that thing!
