Just got me a recurve on ebay. Maybe not the best bow in the world, but it will let me get started with form and see if I'm going to be serious about this. Scored a Western Field Bruin for $70, $9 shipping. Has a good string. Bow is 58", lh, 45lb draw @28". I may have got jacked on it, don't have a clue.Isthis at least a halfway decent bow to get started with?

Now I need arrows. Where do I start on spine for this thing? I will probably shoot aluminum, call my draw length 27-28", and set up a 125 grain tip. That is if I have to buy arrows.

Option #2, I have some old 2117's thatI used with my old compound, can I put a heavy enough tip on them to make them work? Length is probably 29-30 inches, I will have to measure them tonight for sure. I also have some feathers to refletch with, I know I have to ditch the plastic vanes.

Give me some input as to where to go from here.

Okay, went by dads house and he has some Easton 2018 game getters he hasn't used for years, and they have 145 grain tips on them. According to the easton charts this should work? Arrows are 29" long.

Too stiff. Trust me. But they will fly out of it. I use a 2018 with 125tip from a 54lb high performance longbow.

Here is a correct chart to use. You use a easton chart, you will be too stiff every time.

The Easton arrow chart sucks for trad bows--use the link from BC.Like he said--1916's would most likely be the best bet

Yea, I'm with the others on the spine issue. Remember with compound some believe that it is better to be overspined then under. Not the same with trad. To tell you the truth, I don't own a bow that shoots 2117's very well. Even my 67# recurve shoots 2020's. Most of my bows in the 55# range like 2018's.

Congrats with the new bow though. Oh, and since you are just starting out, I wouldn't be too afraid to shoot the arrows that you mentioned while working on form. Make sure though that they have a decent sized fleth on them, and don't shoot bareshafts (they maybe too unstable). They just will not be optimal for the bow. You make end up wearing the the riser also from the arrow making contact.

Thanks guys, I guess what I reall need to do is just pony up and get some new arrows. Can't blame a guy for trying to be frugal though.

Shoot the things first! See how they work for you. Like I told skybuster in answer to his question, if they fly straight with no wiggle and hit where you point them, they're okay. The real story will be told when you put broadheads on 'em though.
