On a whitetail, around 25 yards, under 20 is nicer though. On a target, anything goes.

I am still new at the trad. thing, so take this for what it's worth, I feel very confident out to 20 yds. Just as BobCo stated, anything goes as far as practice is concerned. A couple of buddies and I try to shoot one 3-D shoot a weekend and there is alot of the "Bet you can't hit that target from here." stuff going on, but it makes it fun. In my yard I focus most on shooting from unknown distances, but when I shoot marked yardage I practice out to 40 yds. I will not shoot at a deer this season past 20 yds.

Lets See, when I lived out West, 50 yards, I have a nice set of Antlers from a Mule deer taken at 45 yards with my Longbow. But after not shooting much the last few years, and moving, 20-25 yards is my effective range now.

I'd shoot at 25yds providing the shot felt right but I much prefer them closer.Of the last 10 deer I tagged, the average distance was about 12yds

My effective range- Nothing over 20 yards. 12 to 13 yards is my favorite yardage to shoot at animals. I have taken 2 different deer at 21 yards and 22 yards. Them particular years I was on big time with my shooting out to 25 yards.

You've seen me shoot...and I'd have to say this is true, for me, too. Not tested, though....so we'll see.

I am most comfortable with shots no further than 15 yards at present but would certainly consider a 20 yard if it feels good at the time.
