RE: Hog Hunt Video (graphic)
Hey PD--where the heck have you been?
VA, great vid and EXCELLENT shot! I can vouch for how tough hogs are--they can run a good distance dead on their feet. I don't think a head shot from a high powered rifle would have made it much if any faster. Also, consider the fact that a cut from a sharp blade is virtually painless. The pig was panicked, but not in pain. My dad had a pig farm for 30 years or more, and we often slaughtered our own. I've also had a little bit of experience hunting them with archery equipment (spot and stalk). As much as I love deer hunting, I love pig hunting even more. Bad part is I generally have to travel a good distance to do it. I've never tried it with dogs, and don't have any plans to. Spot and stalk is the way to go IMO, if you like a challenge. If you need some meat, or need to get rid of some pigs on a property (they can decimate a large field of corn practically overnight), dogs would definately help. I've heard of some farmers hireing "professionals" to come in and eradicate a herd to save their crops. Very tough, very smart, very dangerous animals--a great challenge, especially with a bow! ORIGINAL: PowDuck va bowbender gave a "graphic warning" so no need to criticize. Graphic pictures/videos blah blah don't bother me, if i am with the animal I would put it out its misery because im actually doing ita favour (it states that in my hunter ed prog) obviously if im hunting deer I can't run and kill instantly (Be good if i could) But If i see something suffer i aint gonna just stand there and watch it die a slow death. That was my point.. |

I see the ethics police have not paid any attention to when the video was made:D
The ethics in 1995 where a whole lot different to what they are now;) Nice shot on a nice hog but I dont think you split the heart, double lung for sure. |

RE: Hog Hunt Video (graphic)
Although I wasn't there, I've been around hogs long enough to have no doubts that hog was dead on it's feet--it was running on nothing but adrenaline. Heart and lungs were shut down--another arrow would have just meant another broken arrow, possibly damaged meat, and a greater chance for a dog to get cut on a broadhead. Like VA said, it wouldn't have died (orquit kicking--that pig was dead on it's feet) any faster.
Another thing I'll mention--pigs don't feel pain like we do. They tear into each other--the last one I saw killed had both ears shredded and both shoulders were so scarred up that barely any hair grew on them--that was from his "buddies". It was hyped up on adrenaline because of the dogs, not pain. Ever cut yourself with something really sharp? Barely hurts, if at all. Several years ago I read about aguy who was accidently shot with a broadhead--almost died from blood loss--he said it didn't hurt at all. If you get a chance to talk to folks that have killed several deer with arrows, you'll hear lots of stories about deer being shot and barely even flinching--some go back to feeding, until they fall over a few seconds later. A properly placed broadhead is one of the quickest, most painless, and most humane ways to kill an animal--1,000 times more humane than anything nature offers. Chad |
