i too have been shooting for a short period of time and went through trials and tribulations, i like to shoot two different styles. apache
style with my bow at about a 2:00 cant with my head tilted so a can look down the arrow shaft. and split finger with my bow vertical, i dont know if this is odd, since all of my friends are compound shooters and think im crazy for trying to learn the traditional way so i am sort of a lone wolf and basicly do what is comfortable and what works for me

I shoot off the shelf. I found it wasn't the amount I was canting the bow, it was just a large bump in the evolution of my shooting form which is thankfully getting over the bump now.

I cant between 2:00 and 45 degrees. I don't try to keep it the same everytime. I point the arrow where it needs to be or aim instinctivly. Either one works well for me. I can't do straight up and down as I find it hard to get the fleaching in the corner of my mouth while using the split finger method. It just feels uncomfortable. I can do it with 3 fingers under but I have to decreace my draw length to be comfortable, so I just shoot with it canted to get the best performance out of my recurve.

I shoot best when I don't cant. It took a long time to straighten out my shooting after reading Asbell's book. I'm left eye dom. and shoot right handed. I can't gap shoot. The upper limb doesn't interfere with my sight picture at all. Dick

I think you should cant at the same angle you point . What I mean is, with your bowhand point your pointer finger at something. Now place the bow in your hand and keep the same angle. The arrow takes the place of your finger.
As far as your arrows have been creeping off center thing, You better check your anchor. It will change where your arrows are hitting alot. A tiny bit at your anchor is a whole lot out there.
