Default Wipe-on Polyurathane

I bought a can of minwax wipe-on poly at Walmart, because it was too cold for my gasket lac to work in the barn. The stuff went on over the analine dye just fine, and seems to hold cresting (paint-pens)well. Very easy to use.
Anybody had any problems with the stuff?
I know Lilhunter doesn't like gasket lacquer. This stuff is just as easy, but takes longer to dry.
What's your opinion of it?

John : I use it on my self nock arrows . Because if I dip them the nocks will get cloged up. Three or four coats ,holds up real well.

John, I tried spray poly a few years ago, and I found one major problem with it--my arrows were literally glued into the targets I shot. Dang near took a truck to pull them out of a 3-d or cardboard butt. I reckon the friction melted the poly just enough. Might be totally different with the Minwax--think I used the cheap brand from Wal-Mart.

This may sound silly but it's worked great for me now for several years. I first use a 0000 steel wool and get the finish on the arrow smoooth. Then I use a good quality car wax, giving it several coats. I found that the once a year waxes last longer. Much smoother over the rest and makes it a breeze to pull from any target. This will work on wood, carbon or alum.

John

I absolutly LOVE the gasket lacquer and how it works....but its junk and wont last in the durability and waterproofness departments. For an arrow maker its great, for a bowhunter is junk!!!

I have also used poly before in the past and it works fine. It did eat my cresting bands when using testers, mainly the gold and silver would dissapate.

you can use gaskets with just about anything out there. Depending on what you are using it will keep the smells down, minimize waste, and dry quicker! Just some food for thought!

The waxing sounds like a great idea. I use "bullet lube" It's a heavy, oily substance used to keep bullets from sticking when reloading. Works great but kinda messy.

Mike,

Try a couple coats of the massey finish on the last 10-12"es, or a couple over the hole shaft. Not only is it on of the most waterproof systems out there, it has NO target burn.

John, my biggest problem with the Wipe On Poly (Minwax) was that it starts to turn to jelly and harden pretty quick. I've never got to use the whole can. I tried putting marbles in the can as I used the stuff to keep air off it as much as possible but it still turned hard after a while.Must be something to do with the way they blend it for "wiping on ".I suppose they make it mostly for big jobs where the whole can is used pretty quick.
