Default Custom Bow Preference?

Has anyone hade any experience (good or bad) with the following custom recurve bows, Wes Wallace, Great Plains, Blackwidow, J.K. Chastain, or Zipper? I would really like your true opinion on this. Thanks a million,

Mark

Hey Mark, welcome it's good to see you here.

The only bow on that list that I have personal experience with is Black Widow. I've shot several and just sold a 34 year old widow which paid for my new longbow. They are excellent shooters. The newer ones shoot hard and are superbly crafted and if properly tuned and silencers added, they are as quiet as most other takedowns. As for the rest of the bows you have listed, I don't think I've heard any bad about any of them and I frequent a few traditional archery message boards. I guess my recommendation would be to shoot as many of these bows as you can. I'm sure some of them have a try before you buy, widow does I think. Anyway, try them out if you can because what's great in the hands of one archer isn't in the hands of another and custom bows are getting fairly pricey to make a purchase without knowing if you like it or not. Good luck on your quest for a new bow. I hope you like it here and stick around to share some of your wisdom and wit with us.

I've shot both the Black Widow and the Wes Wallace. Like Cliff 'n Di, the only thing I would question is the price. A friend has a Wes Wallace Mentor with two sets of limbs and he's got $1100 wrapped up in it.

only bow on your list that i have had experience with is BW. as far as customer service goes and availability of having someone to talk to, they are TOPS. called one day to ask a question about my bow, who did i talk to, none other than Mr. Beck himself. as far as the choice between the bows you mentioned, go to a big shoot where the vendors will be there and shoot one of each. BW has the test drive program and i highly recommed it. one thing that i would do before dropping that kind of cash on a bow is be 110% sure of what you want, due to the fact that an extra set of limbs can be as expensive as a whole bow of a diff manuf. as far as MY preference now, Chek Mate crusader.

I just recently bought a Brackenbury bow, made by Jim Brackenbury, with an extra set of limbs thats a lot like Wes Wallace bows I think. Its smooth and very shootable ( I am going to sell it, I just like longbows better ). My buddy has a Widow, SA model and I like the grip and the feel, it shoots fine but is a little bulky in the riser. The finish is the best I have seen along with my Adcock longbow.

one of my partners bought a Wes Wallace. Great looking bow. He did have problems with the finish as it was cracking in the cold (he likes to go stump shooting at -30). Every time it happened WW took that bow as priority! Eventually they got it fixed! Personally havent dealt with any company as far as purchases. I have talked to BW's owner...great man to talk to!

Dan,

Stump shooting at -30? Are you sure that it was the finish on your friends bow that needed fixed? <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

I've owned & shot many great tradbows thru-out the years & to date Black Widow recurves are the best shooting (for me personally).
