Default 'Nother Hog Story

Must be that time of year?

Got back Sunday night from a quick trip to SC. I'm pressed for time, so I'll keep it short.

Friday afternoon, lots of sign but no hogs. Sat. am, at our guide's honey hole, he caught six tresspassers running dogs and with one dead hog (he isn't a paid guide, didn't charge us for the hunt, but he is a game warden). Left that place and went to another. Within 1/4 of a mile, saw dirt flying up on the dike (hunting on an old rice plantation). There were three of us hunting, and we had elected my buddy Mike to get the first stalk. Long story short, he got a nice boar--no scale, but we guessed him to be a solid #200-#225. A real war horse, scarred from one end to the other, big head, huge tusks. Not the biggest that had come from the area, but the second biggest our guide had seen there in several years of hunting. Wound up being the only one we saw, but it was obvious the place holds gobs of hogs. We plan to try again next year, hopefully being able to hunt longer and find more piggies.

Had a great time, our host was the best. Can't wait to do it again!

Sounds like a great time. Someday I will hunt for hogs. The only hog hunting we have in Pa is inside a fence[:'(]Not my cup of tea! I will book a hunt out of state some year I hope!

I have pics, but never learned how to post them![8D] If someone wants to, I'll e-mail them.

Nothing against folks who shoot pigs in fences or in front of dogs (I have friends that do both), but I like the way we did this one. Baiting is legal where we hunted, but we didn't hunt over it. The poacher was using dogs, and they literally had a dead pig in minutes. We heard the whole thing--the boat moter had barely been shut off when the dogs started barking. Within 10 minutes the pig was squeeling, then it was quiet. They had the pig with them when they were caught. Took us two days to get one, but I'll bet we had a lot more fun with it. Hunted HARD in GA last year, wading through the swamps for two days and only shot one small pig. Spot and stalk is just a rush! Won't fill upthe freezer as quick, but dang it's fun!

Our hunt only cost us gas, food, and a 3-day license, so if we hadn't come home with any meat we wouldn't have had a big loss. Part of the food was free, thanks to our host having crab pots. Fresh blue crab is fine eating after a long day! Looking forward to doing it again next year!

I have nothing against poeple who do the fence hunts either or dogs. I think I would like the dog hunt. Hunting inside a fence is just not for me.

Thanks! According to the folks that know me, I'm not much good for anything (but I don't listen to them).

Pic 1 is the three stooges--my buddies Mike and Dan, and myself.

Pic 2 is Mike (the shooter) and Rhett (our gracious host).

Pic 3 is the hog (not me, the one Mike shot)

Pic 4 is a close-up of the tusks--NASTY

Thanks again for taking care of that for me!
