Traditional Expo

Anyone going to Kalamazoo Mich. for the show? There are a few of us from Illinois that are going. It's a good show. Dick

I want to go, but I don't have the money to get a hotel room. I might go up on the Saturday, but I wish I could stay the whole time. I have $30 to my name right now and payday isn't until the 18th. I need to get somebody to sponser me. I am a young (17) traditional archer who needs encouragement. He he. Danations can be made payable to Jesse Neil.

RE: Traditional Expo

Have you tried calling the hotels? I know the Hotel we stayed in that hosted the Banquet after the expo had discounted rates for bowhunters/archers who were attending the expo.

I would love to go but figured saving my time for my last good hunting endeavor this fall before jumping on the mainstream of 'real life' is a priority. Havent figured out where I am going to take my wife though...hopefully she doesnt get to peaved at me !

I'll be going and will be camping at Timberlake Campground in Climax Michigan (20min east)at a full service campground. Cost 15.00 a night and as of now it looks like I'll be the only one there. This is Chessbum by the way but I have not been able to log on at all since I got back from Texas last week. I figure it won't be any worse than the crummy hotel I stayed in last year that had no heat and lousy reception on the tv. Besides maybe with the money I'll save maybe I'll join a new organization or buy another longbow. And LBR I'd like to get my handle back if you could do something for me so I can go back to being incognito.

I should camp out then. Probably too cold for a tent though. Chessbum needs to sponser me and let me stay with him

I'll just be going for the day. We should try and meet a specified time somewhere at the show. It's always nice to meet people that your talking to on line. Any ideas on where? Dick

Benchleg, Im not sure if we will be going or not. I'll let ya know if we do.

RE: Traditional Expo

Toxo buddy I would love to sponsor you but for two things.
1) I ain't rich (reason for camping over hotel)
2) You ain't 18

I'm not sure I'm even brave enough to go through with this on top of that. I would love to help you out but having a fifteen year old son myself I don't think I would let him run off camping with strange people with names like Chessbum if you catch my drift. Jack (Floxter) since you are over 18 you are welcome to join me if you would like as it looks like I will have extra room. Anyway I hope to see both you guys there at the Expo.

wait, did I say 17? I am dislexic. I meant 71. LOL, j/k
Can I camp in my truck?
I could probably handle that.

Floxter 01-11-2002 06:58 PM

RE: Traditional Expo

John, I'm so far over 18, that it's starting to come around for the second time. Thanks for the offer tho.

Dick, I'll probably be hanging around the Elite Arrows booth with my friend Paul Jalon. I think he might be handling the Shrew Bows booth for Ron LeClair.

I wonder if they would let me camp at the Kalamazoo Fairgrounds? I could be security. Tox, I've slept in cars, trucks and and the side of freeways so much when I was your age I grew to hate it. I even decided to go back to school and get edgicated so I never ever have to go hungry or sleep on pavement again. I once spent 20 hours on the entrance ramp to the Penn Turnpike hitch hiking with my two dogs. I was there so long I started recognizing people going back and forth to work but no one in there right mind would pick me up. I also got so hungry I tried eating the mutt's Purina (YUCK!). Finally I got a ride from a drunk demolitions expert and I got off at the Howard Johnson on the Pike. I also got so hungry I tried eating my mutt's Purina (yuck!). But the adventure still calls me back. I guess being a product of the sixties is why I enjoy trad bowhunting and playin Gypsy with my old trailer so much. I envie your spunk kid so don't give up getting to the Expo you'll find away. What about bringing one of the parents along for the weekend?

You guys don't know HOW MUCH I would like to go to that Trad Expo-but alas too much money, too far from home, too much time off my winter job that I have to have to pay bills and support my habits-RATS! Cam

It's the only thing happenig this time of year. Cam, I'm kind of in the same boat as I just got back from two weeks in Texas, my wife is not to thrilled about me comming home with another "great deal" and my boss wants me to work every weekend. That's the main reason I'm camping (Economics 101)that weekend. If I save 80 bucks camping out and I happen to spend 400 bucks or possibly more at the expo I still saved 80 bucks. As far as I know there are still 139 open sites at Timberlake Campground you can read about the fun things availible at http://www.the-campground-network.co...Campground.htm

Jason,
Probably on Saturday. Dave and I are going for sure and there are a few more from CBH. Your more than welcome to come with us but you get the back seat of my extended cab. We're only going for the day. Let me know, Dick

I have decided I will get up real early and head out there for the Saturday. Seems like that would be the day to be there. We'll have to work out a place to meet each other. Ought to be a good show, though it is too bad I won't have my tax return by then. I think I am going to find myself a longbow, but I hope to get one quick so I can join some longbow shoots along with the recurve. Looking hard at a Northern Mist. I don't want to spend more that $400.

JD Vasos 01-15-2002 08:12 PM

RE: Traditional Expo

Tox if you can pick up a used Bear Montana for a hundred bucks you will have a good longbow for the bucks. I have shot alot of longbows of different types and cost and I am impressed with the way that bow handles and am seriously thinking of buying one for bow fishing if I find one. While your there at the Expo go shoot all the new longbows first to find what you like than look around for someone carrying a used one and ask them if it is for sale. Try it out first and look for damage like warps or cracks befor you buy. I have got several good buys on used longbows myself without getting ripped off. Remember people trying to sell bows more than likely are trying to buy a new bow and will tend to be more negotiable (they need the money)which is in your favor. Last year Saturday was more crowded than Sunday. Chessbum

Just to let anyone know that the Timberland Campground Campout is canceled(I will not be there ) and I will be camping in a hotel room for the weekend. It was a great idea before its time. Who ever heard of Traditional Bow Hunters camping out in the winter? Hope to see you all at the Expo.

Chessbum, Paul Jalon and I are driving over early Saturday AM and will be there only for part of the day, as we have to leave to be back at Detroit Archers for the evening. I'll look for you.

I am gonna be there from open to they kick me out on Saturday. I might even buy a cool "traditional type" hat to wear. They look stupid as all heck on me but that is half the fun. So look for a tall and skinny dorky kid in a funny hat and odds are it will be me. I think I am gonna shoot every bow I can.

Guys,
JRW, Falcon, And I will be there on Saturday. I'll be the ugly 300lb. guy with the bald head. Hope some of us can meet up. Dick

Look for me Saturday, mid-morning. I'll be the bald, ugly guy, in the Syracuse Sweatshirt.

I'll be the 6'4" ugly guy with the brown leather jacket, whitetail deer sweatshirt, jeans, and a brown baseball cap with deer on it. Might leave the jacket in the truck though :)

Probably be half crippled and walking hunched over after sitting in the back of Dick's extended cab all the way to Kalamazoo.

Yes John my true identity has been revealed and my BUCK status has been striped away from me. LBR tried to help me get my "Chessbum" handle back but could not and I went to higher powers and was ignored so I have resorted to lurking here and posting on the other site. Great site but if I can not be Chessbum here than I can not go on like this stripped of everything (sob! excuse me while I wipe the tears off my keyboard)John. And yes JRW I will be standing on a chair or ladder watching for your ugly mug and baseball cap at Kalamazoo but if I miss you stop over at the Michigan Longbow Assoc. booth and look me up. (I'm sory about the ugly mug statement JRW, I shouldn't say that to a 6ft4 guy who knows my real name)

Toxophiliac 01-20-2002 09:09 AM

RE: Traditional Expo

So it seems we are all ugly....lol.
I am not bald YET(I will be) and I only weigh 140, so I don't quite fit in. I can pull over half my body weight with a compound, how many of you can do that.....lol.

Hey I got an idea! Lets do lunch together on Saturday? Better idea than camping out isn't it and maybe we can get young Toxophi to pick up the check?

Whoa there you old Bum, only Checks I am pickin up are Chek-mates. Judging by the weights you guys listed, you might make me broke. Lunch is a great idea though. Best I have heard yet. I think we can all spring for out own bill. Any suggestions on where to eat? How will we meet up? We also need to go to Gander Mountain and put my 20% discount to good use.

JD Vasos 01-20-2002 01:24 PM

RE: Traditional Expo

Meet at the Michigan Longbow Assoc. booth (thats where all the youngsters are shooting baloons)at around noon and we can drive somewhere close and if your late I can leave a message at booth where we are going. The food situation at the fairgrounds is nothing to brag about.
Chessbum

Toxophiliac 01-20-2002 02:37 PM

Hey chessbum, do you think well have time to take a couple shots at the balloons?
What is everybody's real name so I know who to look for/call you?
Mine is Jesse.

JD Vasos 01-21-2002 06:56 AM

RE: Traditional Expo

If you sign up for a one year membership with the MLA (a good deal at 15 bucks)I will let you shoot arrows at the baloons Jesse. By the way they have a campout (membership meeting) at Calidonia in the Spring that is free to members and you can shoot 3d, stump shoot, and do an American Round on the rifle range with your longbow until your arms fall off which more than pays for your membership price.
