I apologize for the photo in the back of the truck.

Shot was a 33 yd shot on this buck that was slightly quartering away. Complete pass-thru......40-50 yd recovery.

When assessing the shot....imagine where the front leg would be when the buck was standing. I'll give the results of the autopsy, later.

So.....would you be proud of this shot? Would you consider this "optimal"? If not.....what IS "optimal"?

Well, the deer is dead. That is pretty optimal. I would have aimed a little farther forward, end result would be the same, however.

I'd like it a bit further forward (see green spot).

Well if it's from the ground I'd say it was a little high and to far back, maybe the top of the lungs. From a tree stand ,it's about as good as it gets. Right in the boiler room and about as close to the heart as you can be. If it wasn't a heart shot you couldn't get any closer.

Is the exit on the leg? It looks good to me, I think your green dot is too far forward on a slightly quartered away deer shot from above. Worst case, right between the two.

Look where the other leg is.......the off-side leg.

That is where the right front leg would be when this deer was standing.

What's "Optimal"? Double-lung? Lung and heart?
