Arthur, per your request, except I used the midrange trajectory instead of just a flat 20 yards, to show the high point in the arc:

318grn +2 at 17.2 yards -1.3 at 30yards
400grn +2.5 at 16.6 yards -1.7 at 30 yards
470grn +3.1 at 16.2 yards -2.0 at 30 yards
542grn +3.8 at 15.9 yards -2.2 at 30 yards

For what it's worth, moving the pin to zero at 26 yards for the 542 grain arrow puts it +3.4 midrange and -2.9 at 30. 26.5 would probably be perfect for it, but the program won't let me do it.

What'cha thinkin'?

Rangeball, which program are you using, and how long are your arrows, and fletching....feathers or vanes?

Looking at your first post, if you use 4" vanes you'll shoot 318fps and just over 74 Ft/Lb of KE at ZERO yards.
At 35 yards you will be at 284 fps, and 59.4 ft/lb KE
Shooting 5" feathers, at 35 yards, you would be at 276 fps, and 56.33 ft/lb KE
As per "The archery Program"

I'm thinking that 1.8" at the short end and .9" at the tail end between the lightest and heaviest arrows aren't all that meaningfull for hunting within 30 yards. You can still shoot one pin with the heavy one (with a little bit of Kentucky windage on the easy to judge short shots) and get the additional energy, momentum and quieter shot.

Nothing says you can't settle in on 450 grain arrows and get a little flatter shooting and still pick up some extra energy.

Arthur, that's what's jumping out at me to.

Stealth, I'm using a trial version I downloaded called Arrowpro. I put in 28" arrows, 4" feathers. I downloaded this last year, not sure of the link, but it came up in a search engine, most probably nbci...

A neat little program that lets you view the arrow in flight until it hits a big Grizzly . The trial version only does horizontal shots. The pay for also does downhill and uphill, plus some other stuff, I think. But for my needs, this one's doing fine. You can only use the trial version 10 times. My computer got shut down while I was gone to lunch, so I only have 2 times left <img src=icon_smile_sad.gif border=0 align=middle>

<BLOCKQUOTE id=quote<font size=1 face='Verdana, Arial, Helvetica' id=quote>quote:<hr height=1 noshade id=quote> In any event I think the optimum speed for a whitetail rig should be in the 260 to 280 range as long as it's controllable and not too noisy. <hr height=1 noshade id=quote></BLOCKQUOTE id=quote></font id=quote><font face='Verdana, Arial, Helvetica' size=2 id=quote>

<BLOCKQUOTE id=quote><font size=1 face='Verdana, Arial, Helvetica' id=quote>quote:<hr height=1 noshade id=quote> Gee Whiz, I may have to through my recurve out this year. Try 180 FPS with that one. - - Just kidding But it does shoot 180 FPS and I still use it for hunting. <hr height=1 noshade id=quote></BLOCKQUOTE id=quote></font id=quote><font face='Verdana, Arial, Helvetica' size=2 id=quote>

Well, to be more clear I meant shooting a compound bow with sights. Shooting instinctively, gap, or some other reference method with traditional gear in my opinion, is a very different ballgame. My longbows shot in the 160 to 175 FPS ranges when I hunted with such gear.

Tbone, here are three sites that should be bookmarked in your favorites.

www.bowjackson.com
www.huntersfriend.com/bowselection.htm
www.bowhunting.net

On Bowhunting.net, scroll down and find the columnists section, then look for the link to Bob Ragsdale's home page.

Someone else will have to give you the links to the archery programs. Jackson has a ballistics program on his site, but it's a little more basic than these programs are. But it's free....<img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>

And there is a lot of stuff you just pick up from experience.

Tracey, I knew just enough to be dangerous when I started hanging around on this forum. I realized early on there are some extremely knowledgeable individuals who are eager to share the wealth here. I pick their brains with stupid questions like this one as much as possible. The search function here should reveal a plethora of info on most any subject about a bow and it's function, but sadly, it now only goes back 30 days, a huge, huge loss.

Listen closely to what some of these guys say, and ask as many questions as you can think of. I'll try to find the link to the arrowpro download. If successful, I'll add it here.

Found it- http://loadsoft.narod.ru/education_a...619_index.html

From this page you can find links to many sites where it's available.

Listen, the bottom line is that I have tested light arrows at moderate speed on whitetails for years. Shooting a carbon arrow tipped with a 100 grain Rocket Steelhead (total wight = 320 grains) at 270 fps, I have been blowing right through even large bodied bucks for the past 4 years. I am not sure how many deer I have taken but the number is around 16 in two different states. I hunt only from the ground and often find my arrow as much as 20 yards past the deer. I use 1 pin set at 25 yards. That gives me a kill window of 0 to 30 and a KE of 51 lbs.
