Way to go Matt great shooting. Iwas there at that time but was looking to leave. In fact I was in the archery arena at that time, but after 7 1/2 hours of walking around the show, I was pretty worn out. I hear some hootin' and hollerin' from the 3D range when I was in there. Were you puttin on a demonstration of how to woop a Buckeye or was that just a standing ovation for when you pulled out the red and black foam/buckeye slayer? Congrats bud good shootin!

Thanks guys.......but where was my cheering section!? I thought you guys (PAHardwoods and Muzzy) were stopping by? Bums. I might have to defect to the Ohio side.;)

I'll tell ya.....the shoot was much different than the qualifier. We shot all but 2 of the targets that the Open class guys shot. The only 2 we didn't shoot were the Grizzly and Caribou all the way at the top row. We shot everything else so Hunter was no picnic.

You should see how small the 10 ring looks on a Rinehart strutting turkey at 33 yards 20 rows up into the stands across that arena.[:-]

Just thought I'd add.......Shot the finals tonight at the Harrisburg Eastern Sports and Outdoor Show for Mens Hunter Class. (Was more like MBR tonight, they had us shooting into the rafters[:-])

1st Place- Your's truly Pumpkin = 326
2nd Place = 314
3rd place = 303

Now I'm tired and have to get up at 6:00AM to shoot our winter league 3D. Practice up little Buckeyes, practice hard.;)

Great shooting Matt!! So I'd guess that the Old Glory didn't take long to get used to??;)

RE: Ohio versus PA Smackdown Official Thread

Matt, I read in another thread that your pins setup for 3D = 22-27-33-38. Those pins must be awful close together! What was your draw length again? I am still trying to figure out what pin settings to use for the HC with a max of 35 yards. I used to shoot open class 10 years ago before I quit shooting 3D so I have to figure this pins thing out. It seems like the pins would literally be on top of each other with only 5 yards between pins, I was thinking of going every 8 yards (will be at 296 fps). Just thought I would ask since you seem to have it figured out and shot very well with that setup.

Of course personal preference comes into play as well. Some don't like the sight picture "cluttered" up with all those pins so close together and they would rather gap shoot the between yardages. Others like to have them bunched together so they are aiming right on or holding a little high or low on the between yardages. Like I said, I have no idea which I would prefer, I am used to shooting a scope! I need to try them both I guess and see what seems most comfortable. I decided to shoot pins versus the scope now that I am getting back into 3D just because it's more similiar to a hunting setup and most of the forum guys are in HC.

Matt / PA 02-13-2005 12:48 PM

RE: Ohio versus PA Smackdown Official Thread

Blodg,
Actually there's plenty of room to see between my pins as set right now.......I'm shooting 360gr arrows from my Old Glory at 282fps at 30"/60# (Peep, loop and 2 tied in nock sets)
I shoot the smallest .019 pins off my Spot-Hogg "Hogg-it" and it gives me a nice fine aiming point.
They aren't far apart, but there's enough air to gap shoot nicely.
Remember IBO Hunter Class is "Approx 35 yards" which means we'll see targets to 37-38 yards.
I might be switching arrows soon for some GT 22 Series Ultralight Pros which will give me a finished arrow weight around 340grs or so so I can bump my speed up to the limit for ASA and still be good to go for IBO. I'm pretty decent at judging yardage so I don't feel the need to max out the speed. I like that slightly longer heavier more stable arrow still zipping along nicely.
Anything in the 295fps + class becomes a little cluttered for gap shooting unless you start spreading the yardages out a bit more........like 22-28-35-40
Or since your from Ohio maybe just 20-30-40 is easier to understand?;):D

I shot my Pro38 Dual cam a few season ago at 333fps for 3D a couple shoots for giggles, and while still dead on accurate it was like aiming with a stop light plus the green turn arrow at the bottom.......very tough to see past them to what you were shooting at.

Congratulations Matt! Glad you're on my side.:D Sorry fella, I took my father down last Saturday to the show and was going to go with PaHardwoods yesterday, but I really needed to catch up on some sleep after my marathon 3 week 14 hour a dayers I did to get a project at work done.

Again, congrats buddy. By the way, how do you prefer your buckeye grilled?:D

I like my Buckeyes Roasted. Those poor guys don't know what they are in for. With mine and Matt's Old Glory's driving tacks. There won't be anywhere to put anyone elses arrows in bullseye. Well I hear you Ohio guys couldn't hit the broad-side of a barn if you were inside it!! Sorry I didn't get to meet ya Matt, I really wanted to. I think us PA guys need to get together sometime and have a sort of practice session to get to know each other, what do you guys think?

I remember meeting you at Nelson. My buddy and i are going to try and make all the triple crown shoots the only one in doubt right now is Erie.We have a bear hunt in New Brunswick planned for that week but with a little luck we'll lay the smack on the bears early in the week and join the rest of team Ohio for some smashing pumpkins at the end of the week.Be nice to meet some of the people from the forums there.

So what do you guys think about the format here? Take the top 3 scores for each? Or maybe top 4 depending on how many make it? Or maybe throw out Matt/PA's score and take the rest for PA? LOL

Also, are any of the PA guys going to any of the other IBO National rounds or just PA? I know Phil, Justin, and myself are planning on going to all 3 rounds. 4 months until the June PA triple crown shoot seems a long ways off! It has been over 10 years since my last 3D shoot and I can't wait to get started. Depending on how cold it is I may shoot my first local shoot on Feb. 27th. Back when I quit going to the IBO Nationals they didn't even have an 11 ring, will be interesting to see how it goes. I did shoot an ASA Pro-Am with a 12 ring back then but never liked how it's not centered in the 10 ring.

Speaking of ASA, any of this group thinking about the ASA Pro-Am in PA? I would love to go but it's about an 8 hour drive for me and I have to fit this 3D stuff in between helping coach my son's baseball team. The three IBO shoots may be all I can swing…. I would love to shoot another ASA though, much smoother ran than the IBO nationals and more spectator friendly.

Actually I think that would be a great shoot for everyone to get together at , at least for the PA guys? It's pretty far from Ohio, but if Phil and Pat fire up the Madden cruisers the shoot is at Little Buffalo State park and I believe they have places for RV's?

Very nice shooting Justin. I think you may be our "A" shooter who can match up with Matt/PA. Phil may be our "B" shooter who can match up with PA Hardwoods. I will be our "C" shooter and will have to handle muzzy:D

Never heard any response to my question posted earlier - So what do you guys think about the format here? Take the top 3 scores for each? Or maybe top 4 depending on how many make it? Or maybe throw out Matt/PA's score and take the rest for PA? LOL

I also shot this morning but my "C" shooter status only ended up with 263/330 in MBR. She was set pretty tough with avg. around 38 or 39 yards with 20 of my 30 targets over 35 yards. The highest score in MBR or Open was 276. Highest in HC was 295 and the guy who got 2nd place with 290 finished 2nd last year in HC at the IBO World Championships. I have not heard of anyone shooting "up" yet at this course but next week I will have some 4" vanes fletched up and will give her a try in HC.:)

I shot at Hard Nok's in Bloomville Ohio. I don't know the guys name but the guys I shot with told me he finished 2nd at the World's. However, I looked on the IBO website and the guy who got 2nd in HC last year was not from Ohio. Maybe I was given some bad info, LOL. He was shooting behind me and did seem like a good shooter, he had 2 5's in the 2nd half and still shot 290.

Matt / PA 03-06-2005 06:41 AM

RE: Ohio versus PA Smackdown Official Thread

You aren't throwing out crap........take your beating and like it.;)

I actually didn't get to shoot this weekend because of work, but did 2 shoots last week.
Shot in a 3 man team money shoot at Little Buffalo Archers, we finished 7th out of 20 teams in "Class One" but only 4 pts out of 2nd place. (we screwed up one target)
It was a 28 target format indoors ASA scoring with those low offset 12's and 14's, and score the 2 highest arrows per target........and we finished 56pts. up for 28 targets.
We shot the big boy class, with the Pros and semi pros and the Open A and Open B shooters and I was the only clown there shooting pins. :) We shot well though. One target cost us about $400.:(

My Sunday league was a 298/20X for a 318/330 IBO.
(You buckeyes might want to bring 2 "A" shooters in case one of you gets something caught in your throat about 1/2 way through the course.;))

buckeye 03-06-2005 10:19 AM

RE: Ohio versus PA Smackdown Official Thread

Matt congrats on the great shooting but I have a question.

If you are shooting that well and feel you can hang with the open, semi pro and pro shooters why in the world are you shooting HC?

Why would you shoot a class obviously under your abilities?

Oh and don't worry about me getting anything in my throat.... I fully expect Troy to take over as the "A" shooter by then anyhow:D

pdq 5oh 03-06-2005 11:10 AM

RE: Ohio versus PA Smackdown Official Thread

My A game will be ready by June. My Zen Archery practice is paying big dividends. Can't wait to bust some pumpkin nocks. But don't expect me to shoot 5s and 8s just to do it. And I fully expect my nocks to be safe from all but my brother Buckeyes, IN THE 11. :D:D
BTW, good shooting Matt. If I didn't like ya, I wouldn't be able to bring myself to say so. Being that you're a pumpkin and all. [:-][&:]

Let me correct myself and say I expect Troy or Phil to be the "A" shooters!

Matt / PA 03-06-2005 11:36 AM

RE: Ohio versus PA Smackdown Official Thread

Buckeye,
It's all in the yardages........I don't have the time to practice at 40 and beyond. I might shoot like an above average open class guy, but I GUARANTEE you that I can't judge yardage 1/2 as good as the average Open class shooter beyond 40 yards.
That money shoot I was in, everyone shot from the same stations and the max was 37 yards. (12 targets over 30 indoors) You really have to be precise with pins against good scope shooters at that range.[:-]
I've never been to a "big" shoot either, and honestly this is the first year I have really been able to shoot 3D a little bit seriously beyond hunting practice. Last year I made exactly 1 shoot.........1.:(
So we'll see how it goes at the Triple Crown, and Worlds....and that ASA in HC. Trust me from what I hear, HC is no walk in the park and their are some damn good shooters.

I will shoot HC in the bigger shoots, maybe dabble in some MBR here and there, and then think about a higher class if I have some success.

BowTech_Shooter 03-06-2005 04:23 PM

Hey, and if anyone is sandbagging it's Phil! He's been to these big shoots before.;) He's a ringer.

Blodg 03-06-2005 07:07 PM

RE: Ohio versus PA Smackdown Official Thread

You guys are funny with the sandbags....

With the talk of classes my thoughts are to do this whole year in HC although I may continue to shoot some local shoots in MBR just to get a taste of the longer yardages. Next year I doubt I will shoot HC, will probably go back to Open since hardly anyone shoots MBR anymore. And 50 yard max separates the men from the boys, and evidently Matt is not one of the men from his post above:) Just kidding, my yardage estimation over about 35 yards sucks axx and over 40 yards you have to be within 2 or 3 yards to get a 10 and within 1 yard to get an 11. Sucks when guys beat you just because they can judge yardage better when you were tearing them up on the practice bails.
