My 400 grain arrow @ 70 lbs produces around 67 ft lbs of KE.

My 3D arrows weigh 265gr and shot from 53#. My hunting arrows vary from 300gr to 330gr depending on which ones I use, and shot from 55# to 60#. These are used for deer sized game (NOT big game). I'm not a KE freak. I rely more on a good sharp broadhead and accuracy (shot placement) to get the job done.

Depending on arrow and bow configuration...usually between 420 and 440 grains out of a 65 pound bow. My KE numbers have been hovering around 70 ft. lbs in recent years though my new bow may trump that.

As for what is adequate, that, as mentioned above, depends on what you are hunting...though it also depends on the variety of broadhead you plan on using as well as if your bow is tuned correctly.

Hope this helps somewhat.

Deer arrows - 405 grains @ 303 fps

Hog arrows - 500 grain arrows @ 272 fps.

They both have plenty of KE, but the 500 grain arrow penetrates deeper and seems to "hit" harder on the same target.
