Default Let off question

My buddy just told me he was sending his bow back to get different cams, to reduce the let off to 65% (I think he said it was 80% now).

Any way, I asked him why.
He said somebody told him he would get more energy with a lower let off. Is this correct? Let off is dictated by what.... the shape of the cam? If the draw length and wieght is the same, how can it give you more enegy?
I'm technically challenged when it comes to archery. So take it easy on me.

yes 65% can have a bit more energy but it's really not that much from my experience & I don't think I would have spent the money on it.

I seen some bows get no speed advantage with less let off. The most you will probably get is about 5fps. This will not change you pin setting at all and I dought if it will ever make a difference between a pass through on an animal. Some people can shoot more accurate with less let off but I am not one of them.

65% let-off is P&Y legal, anything ovewr is not. Be safe.

Mike,

The reason a lower let off bow can generate more energy is because of its effect on the draw force curve. Since you are holding more poundage at full draw the arrow will reach peak poundage quicker and for a longer time through the curve. The higher let off starts out at a lower poundage and takes a fraction of a second longer to reach peak weight.

I agree with moonge and RN,HUNTER that the increase in power is minimal at best because of the advance in cam design and the incredibly steep draw force curve found in today’s bows

I'm going to 65% let off, not for the added energy or fps (if they happen, it's gravy) but looking for more stability at full draw... Currently 80%
