Default Tiller Measurments

I have a Browning Vanguard LX bow and I was wondering if the tiller measurment should be the same for both limbs. It's a solo cam type bow. What is the correct way to measure it? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

for a solo cam take a piece of serving thread as a strait edge from axle to axle by holding it behind the e clips on the axles, pull tight and measure from the limbs behind the pockets to the serving thread the measurement needs to be the same dimensions on both sides.

That's how it's done ,but you can also measure to your string as well and save the thread.from the top of your riser to the string and then again from the bottom of your riser to the string .They both need to be the same or adjust one or the other till they do. {Sorry from the inside where your riser meets the limb to the string}

Nubo, I don't think this would provide accurate measurments because the cam is the same size as the idler wheel. I've always heard to do the ata thing.

I checked it with a string pulled from axle to axle and there was a difference of 1/32nd. I adjusted it so that both were the same. I checked it measuring from the string as nubo suggested and there was 1/4 inch difference. I don't think I have enough adjustment to get it even that way. It's been shootin pretty good for me so I don't know how much improvement I'll see when I shoot it tomorrow. I'm just fine tuning it now for the upcoming season. Thanks for your help.

Adjusting the static tiller dead even, top and bottom, is okay. Just like paper tuning, it's a starting point. If you really want to get the best feel, quietest shot and best shooting from your bow, you need to adjust dynamic tiller. Get both limbs drawing evenly, so that the bow sits dead in your hand throughout the draw, anchor and shot.

I've laid out my simple method of adjusting dynamic tiller many times. I guess once more won't hurt.

Get in front of your target. Load an arrow. Use the same grip you always use when you're shooting. Now, raise the bow and put your pin on the target. SLOWLY begin drawing the bow straight back. (If you're overbowed and can't draw the bow without going through some kind of gymnastics, you cannot perform this test!) Do not force yourself to keep the pin on the target, just let it go where it wants. If the pin pulls UP off the target, take some weight off the top limb or add weight to the bottom, or both. If the pin wants to pull down, take weight off the bottom limb, add weight to the top limb, or both.

Keep adjusting until the pin stays on target all the way through the draw to your anchor.

Nubo
some solo cam bows have have larger idler wheels than the diamiter of the cam, some have smaller diamiter than the cam so if you measure to the bowstring on a solo cam bow and you get both sides the same measurement to the bow string the tiller will be out of adjustment.

setting the tiller properly insures that the limbs are pullung even amounts of draw weight if one is pulling uneven from the other will cause eratic arrow flight.

Exactly. That's why setting tiller dead even is a starting point. The key is how the individual grips the bow, because moving the center of pressure up and down the bow's grip makes the limbs react differently. My grip puts more pressure in the throat of the grip, which puts more load on the top limb. The next guy might put more pressure on the heel of the grip, loading up the bottom limb more. And someone else might have their grip pressure evenly distributed across the center of the grip, which would put more even pressure on both limbs.

With stickbows, you have to sand the limbs to get tiller fine tuned for your grip. Or live with nocksets that are ridiculously high or low. Compounds are so-o-o-oo easy. Just tweak a bolt here and another there. Too bad so many people aren't aware of how much tiller can affect their shooting, and how easy it is to turn many bows they think are lemons into real shooters.

I think nubo was refering to the tiller measurement with a dual cam bow

sure for a dual cam bow measuring tiller to the bow string will work however the fella expressley indicated he needed to know how to measure tiller on a single cam bowlets try not to confuse him
