Yes, a well-made string with no knots will not slip. When I started to make strings years ago, I was told a knot isn't neccessary. Well- I'm one for seeing proof as to why things are or aren't done. I've tried to make them slip on my stretcher with only the loop servings installed and before applying the full length of end serving. Put them under 300# of tension for days. No slip. Why is a knot needed?

If I need to explain this, I guess I will. Maybe some lurkers will pick some info up. A single strand of bowsting material is very waxy. When you tie your knot, you are only doing it with a single strand. Single strand knots with a waxy material don't hold their position worth a damn.

But the longitudinal "gripping" factor of multiple strands in a bundle is quite high, ESPECIALLY high in a properly twisted string. That's why just a couple of inches worth of loop serving (and no knots) can hold 300# for days without slipping.

Use them if you like. That Larry Wise character just doesn't know what he's talking about when it comes to archery stuff, does he?

What Larry Wise does with the tag ends, isn't what I'd call a knot. He take the tag ends and does a few cross over weaves. When I make a string, I find it very convenient to get the tag ends out of the way before I serve the end loops. This weave serves that purpose. It takes only a second, and in addition it helps to close the loop when the string is under tension. To me, it's easier to make a string using Wise's method. I highly recommend it.
