Junk Outback or what?
Guys I need some help. Got an Outback that has been too two different pro shops and just came back from Mathews. It will not go above 66 lbs (70 lbs limbs), the nock point changes daily and it seems unusally loud, and no big deal but the string supressors came from the factory installed backwards( idler on the cam and cam on the idler). We got on the phone with Brett and Jeff at mathews and they said they could not find anything wrong with the bow and that this is the only Outback that is having any problems that they know of. They said it left the factory pulling 72lbs and was is spec. At the pro shop we pulled it on three different scales, one hand held and two diiferent $1300 dalton digital scales, it will only pull 66 lbs. The limbs are cranked down and the brace height is only 7 3/8 with the ATA 32 3/4. Buy the way the cam alignment holes show the cam is over rotated. Nothing is in spec. I don't know what Mathews means buy all is well with this bow and they don't see anything wrong. I will be driving 5 hours this Tuesday to see a trusted friend, pro shop owner and one darn good bow tech to see what he can do. Anyone want to give this a go?

RE: Junk Outback or what?
Got it figured out......Mathews....:D:D
![]() beats me....sounds like something is wrong..maybe the limbs aren't really 70 # limbs...perhaps the riser has a slight crack....I dunno... |
RE: Junk Outback or what?
Got it figured out......Mathews.... you have either the wrong limbs or the powerr harness is too long causing it not to have its peak draw weight. does the cam look like it is rotated all the way around? good luck getting any warranty work done on the bow from the factory. |
RE: Junk Outback or what?
Check the cam itself. Mine was pulling below what I thought it should with bolts back all the way in. My Outback came from the factory with an LX cam on it (LX cam identification is "SLHP") I sent it back to Mathews and they replace cam with an "OUTB" cam. Poundage went up. I wrote them a letter when I sent the bow stating that i can't believe the wrong cam was installed. I questioned Mathews quality control and I expected to get some sort of response. I got the bow back without a response. Not good customer service in my book. Take a look at your cam.

RE: Junk Outback or what?
I have the same situation with my lx. It is a 70lb bow that only pulls 67 lbs. I can twist the cable up to get it to 70 but then the cam is way out of position. My bh is only 6 3/8 also. It shoots good but with a 26.5 inch draw I don't want to give up any draw weight at all. I think I'll take my hoyt to hunt elk this year.

RE: Junk Outback or what?
I am not going to say much except for one thing............I would be very upset with the situation![>:]

RE: Junk Outback or what?
Capt Ray !
You definetly have some issue's but it's not junk ,let your friend have a look at it ,but this is exactly why you have a warrany ,I'd let Mathew's sort this out and if your not satisfied THEN.......... nubo |
RE: Junk Outback or what?
If you are short on draw weight, long on ATA length and short on brace height,,, why don't you put twists in the cable AND the string? This will give you more draw weight, brace height and shorten the ATA length. Couldn't Mathews figure this out?

RE: Junk Outback or what?
Lookie here,,,, my 1000th post and it has to do with a Mathews:(:D

RE: Junk Outback or what?
Did you not answer your own question?
Buy the way the cam alignment holes show the cam is over rotated. Walks With Bowtech; Congrats on the grand. I look forward to another 1000. :D |
RE: Junk Outback or what?
Walks with BowTech":D I like it!!!! Or maybe "Walks kinda gimpy while carrying BowTech"[&:] I think this thread just got hijacked! Twist em' up!!!!
|
RE: Junk Outback or what?
Brace is low, ATA is too long. Cam is over rotated. Weight is low. Sounds like Gimpy hit it on the nose. Twsit 'em up. This ain't rocket science.

RE: Junk Outback or what?
NUB, please correct me if I'm wrong, but if the bow is NEW, and according to Mathews in spec, I should not have to twist the string/cables to get the cam in time, the poundage up or fix the brace height and ATA. Seems to me that I would be putting a bandage on some other problem. Is this systemic of a more significant problem or am I not fully understaning the simplicity of it. I have never proclaimed to be any sort of a bow tech, but I do need to educate myself more. As far as the limbs go, they say 70 lbs but who knows, the cam has OUTB-DR on it. The guys at Mathews had their chance to keep my consumer loyalty, I just want it fixed so I can move on. I will not be supporting the Mathews profit margin any longer.

Ray
the bow is new so you had to buy the bow from a pro shop, did you shoot the bow and test the weight before you bought it or did you just grab it up off the rack and buy it because it said mathews outback on the limbs? just speculating here but... next time before buying on impulse..... checking the bow out very thourroughly before buying it can and will save you from having to deal with issues like this. |
RE: Junk Outback or what?
Twist your cable to get the a to a at 31 1/2, right now you're 1/4" long. Then twist your string to get the cam in the proper position.
|
RE: Junk Outback or what?
It sounds like it is a simple problem. The strings and cable will stretch and that will cause things to get out of spec. Usually it's just the cable though and putting the cam back into proper position by twisting it up will increase your draw length and increase your draw weight. I think that's why a lot of guys go to after market strings that stretch less. But for me I don't see it as a big deal to twist things up as needed. I wouldn't sweat that, you have a great bow.

RE: Junk Outback or what?
Bigpapascout, yes the bow is new, but I did not, and do not impulse buy. I bought a second Mathews because I owned an LX and was very pleased with it, and had shot the display Outback on several occasions and was extremely impressed with it. Yes I did shoot my bow and it shot very well at the shop, although I did not put 30 - 40 arrows through it, nor did I measure the brace height or the ATA, I did give it a good looking over. Maybe I should have went over it with a fine tooth comb. Although when I bought my new truck I did not measure the rated horse power or measure the wheele base, I took it at the manufactures word that it was made to spec. It was the second time I shot it that I discovered something was not right. I had to comletely resight the bow in. I thought no big deal maybe the string and cable are just settleling. But when it happened the third time I shot it, I took it back to the shop and when we started investigating we found how out of spec it was. We tried in vane to reset the bow but kept having problems. When we got Mathews on the phone and reported what we had found, they said to return the bow and they would repair/replace the bow. When I got the bow back from Mathews the specs I originally stated was the way it was retured with their blessing on it. Don't get me wrong I do appreciate all the responses. I am just letting the archery community no about this to protect others and maybe help me fix my problem.

RE: Junk Outback or what?
I've owned a few;) and the factory string and cables have a bit to be desired,,, probably just initial stretching. Twist the string and cables up so you have proper rotation and draw weight and you'll be fine. Too bad it's taking this long to get it right[:@] It dosen't sound like someone is taking very good care of you. Keep your chin up, we're here to help!!!!;)

Capt Ray
I didnt mean to ruffle youre feathere by Implying any thing it is just that so many people do buy on impulse or because some one said this is what you need to buy or by being brainwashed by television ads ot ads in the hunting rags. know what I mean? If you dont get sadisfaction I would call Mathews and tell them if they dont fix the problem when you send it back this time the next time they wont be talking to you but your lawyer! I guarantee youre bow will get fixed right then.;) |
RE: Junk Outback or what?
Seems like with the hassle you have already given them, if you just laid it on the line and said enough of the BS i wanna new bow they should send you one!!!!Thought they were a better company than that.

RE: Junk Outback or what?
Capt Ray.......sorry to hear about it.......but everyone is right.......your bow is out of spec !
My Outback with the Zebra strings was 31 1/2" ata, 7 5/8" bh and pulled 75# with the cam in proper rotation ! Put a set of WC strings on and now it is 31 3/8" ata , 7.5" bh and cam properly aligned......it's pulling 76 lbs ! I would be extremely frustrated if I were you........but I think your bow is easily fixable.....with some string twisting like everyone has said ! I would post this over on the Mathews Tech forum.......Art Henderson and Bob Jenkins frequent there many times daily and can give you excellent tech advise(those are the only guys I have dealt with from Mathews and both are great) !! Just a thought anyway ! |
RE: Junk Outback or what?
Thanks guys. Seems everyone is in agreement with the problem and seems to be an easy fix. I am a very loyal consumer when I get good customer service and was extremely frustrated with Mathews lack of concern for an apparent problem with their product. I believe you should get what you pay for! This forum provides more than a technical solution to a problem, it empowers and protects the Bow Hunting community through the greatest advertising media in the world. WORD OF MOUTH. Remember to utilize your god given right this November and VOTE. The right you save may just be your right to bare arms.
