Broadhead Target???
Other than the layered block-type targets, what's a durable material to shoot BH's into? I borrowed a Carbon Block from a friend. I only shot it five times, each time I pulled the arrow out there were chunks of the material coming with it. I stopped shooting his target because I didn't want to tear it up any more. It just didn't seem to be very durable. I've been looking at the Carbon Buck, but I haven't heard any reviews on it yet. How well does a bale of hay work? or styrofoam?

Broadheads will eat up any target.............and quick.
Shoot it like you stole it - then steal another:D |
RE: Broadhead Target???
I've often heard a big pile of sand is the ultimate broadhead target as far as durability is concerned...

RE: Broadhead Target???
I have used the shot up midsections from 3D targets. You can usually get them for free or real cheap from a club. Just put some spots on the ends where it actually attaches to the head section or tail section, and the foam is clear. Or lay it on its side and shoot into the top. Free is the best kind.

RE: Broadhead Target???
Reinhart makes one called "The Cube" that is the best target I have ever shot. Been shooting it for almost a year now, about a month of broadheads, and haven't lost one chunk of material. Its a solid soft foam that heals the hole after you pull your arrow. I've shot hundreds of BH's into this target and its awesome. It's shaped like a dungeons and dragons 30 sided dice with 30 spots each on its own surface. It has a rope handle cast right into it and you can just throw it and it rolls around, judge the yardage and shoot. You can not find an angle that you are not square with a spot. Best target made IMHO.
Shot "The Block" before this target and was shotting through it within 2 weeks. |

The rhino block. Not cheap, paid $100 last year and worth every penny. |

I always thought deer, but that might upset the elk hunters and we don't even want to involve the turkey hunters. :D

RE: Broadhead Target???
I have a 5 gallon bucket that I filled half way up with sand and then topped off with some clay, the kind kids play with at school. I have the clay punded in there pretty good so it holds all the sand in without a problem. This works extremely well for me. I've had a few arrows puncture the back, but this doesn't happen if I remember to pack it every few days. This has lasted much longer and arrow removal is much easier than with any other targets I've used.

RE: Broadhead Target???
I thought about making one similar to the neverwear. Buy one or two of those foam squares with the removable center circles. Buy some modeling clay in bulk from a craft store. Knock out the foam centers and fill with the clay. Probably a lot of work, but might be interesting. Still like using shot up midsecions though.

RE: Broadhead Target???
jmac,
Thas a great idea. I think I might just get some modeling clay and take out the core from the 3-d target and fill it with modeling clay and see how that works. |
RE: Broadhead Target???
THANKS for all the replies.

RE: Broadhead Target???
Here is mine. It cost me about $80 to build starting with nothing. Everything was bought from Home Depot. It cost around $15 to replace worn sections. The arrow sticking in it is 33", 4 blade Muzzy 145 grain shot from a 70 pound parker 32 inch draw.

RE: Broadhead Target???
Forkedhorn, due you use a certain type of clay, specially formulated to never dry out and not stick to broadehads and arrows, like neverwear says they use?
If not, do you have any problems with the drying out, sticking to arrows concerns? Bob-co, that's the pink insulation foam board, right? Any problems with residue on arrows or pulling shafts/heads out? |
RE: Broadhead Target???
Rangeball, yess it is. It comes prefolded. I think the whole sheet is around $33. You need one sheet for the entire target. Then just replace layers as needed.
As far as residue, and pulling shafts out - no problems here. But note that I only shoot aluminun arrows. |
RE: Broadhead Target???
Rangeball,
I use no special type of clay and since I set it up in Sept I've had no problems with it drying out or sticking to my arrows. I was worried about it freezing, but even during a week in the 20's, it worked fine. The clay does sick a little to the broadheads, depending on how many holes and crevices the head has, but it comes right out because it sticks to itself more than it does to metal. I actually have my bucket in a large plastic tub that I have filled with old rags and then covered with a piece of burlap. If I happen to miss the bucket, the arrow hits the clothes. It takes a little cutting to get the broadhead out, but not too much.. Also, I like to shoot field points into the clothing target since it is so easy to remove them. |
