How do you measure a recurve bow to figure the bow length?

Man I knew this stuff as a kid

I gather your best bet is to take it to a good bow shop, as changing the length of string an off set draw weight at YOUR draw length

that or contact the ,maker of the bow and ask them what it should be for you!

This will help you figure out what you need. Usually the bow string length for a recurve is the AMO less 4" (a 54" AMO bow would use a 50" string). But you have to be careful because some bowstrings are sold by AMO. Which means that if the label on the string says 54" AMO the string is probably 50" in length. Best to take a tape measure with you and measure the string itself. If your AMO is not marked on your bow, measure from tip to tip (not nock to nock)

The bow is a forty lbs draw weight at a 28 inch draw and 54 inches in length.

Measure your bow from tip to tip. If it measures 54" then buy a 50" string. From there you can adjust your brace height a little by putting in or removing twists in the string. From the pic you showed I would guess you do need a 50" string. If the info on the bow said AMO 54" then you would have needed a 54" string.
Best and safest thing is to actually measure your bow length.
Here's a link on how to do it. https://asklancelot.com/how-to-determine-string-lenght/
